Softball stays perfect with two more wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 2 UIndy softball team capped a successful trip to Florida with a pair of wins on its final day at the PXS Spring Games, held in Clermont, Fla. The Greyhounds (12-0) powered past Wheeling Jesuit, 6-1, before notching another region win in a 4-1 win versus Findlay.

UIndy 6, WJU 1
As the visiting team on the scoreboard, each of the first five batters for the Hounds reached and scored. Junior slugger Natalie Lalich did the heavy lifting, launching her first career grand slam on a full-count offering from WJU starter Mallory Chapman. The blast was good for her seventh home run on the early season.

The Hounds tacked on one more in the second, again via the long ball. With one down and nobody on, centerfielder Jessie Noone went yard for her first homer of the year.

Meanwhile, All-America pitcher Morgan Foley upped her record to 9-0 with another stellar outing in the circle. Ten Ks, three hits and two walks highlighted her pitching line, as the Cardinals were held scoreless through the first 5 2/3 innings before breaking the shutout with a single tally late in the sixth.

UIndy 4, Findlay 1
UIndy got on the board thanks to the first collegiate home run from freshman Marisa Brown - a two-run shot in the second. Two more runs crossed the plate in the fifth, with Cassie Reed's leadoff double started the rally. Reed stole a base and eventually came around on an error. Lalich added an RBI single later in the frame.

Pitcher Miranda Tamayo had another great start, fanning 11 and walking two to move to 4-0 on the year. The Oliers' only run was an unearned tally in the fourth. Tamayo has not allowed an earned run in 19 1/3 consecutive innings.

Undy returns for its home opener Saturday,  Mar. 12 when it hosts Rockhurst for a doubleheader starting at noon.
