ST. LOUIS – The No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team salvaged a split at Maryville Saturday afternoon. After dropping a tight 3-2 decision in the opener, the Greyhounds (41-2, 22-2 GLVC) amassed 13 hits in game two on the way to a 7-1 win.
Â
GAME 1All-America pitcher
Morgan Foley (30-1) was saddled with the loss in game one – her first of the season. The decision halted her personal win streak at an amazing 30, good for the eighth-longest streak in Division II history. Foley finished with nine strikeouts in six innings, with only two of her three runs allowed counting as earned.
Â
Enjoying their best season since joining Division II in 2010, the Saints (34-8, 18-6) overcame a 2-0 hole before plating the game-winning run in the fifth. With the score all tied up, a single by MU junior Casey Ward and a sac bunt put a runner in scoring position with two down. Senior leadoff hitter Krystal Rock stepped to the box and delivered the clutch hit, plating Ward with a base knock to give the Saints the eventual game-deciding tally.
Â
Both of UIndy runs crossed in the top of the third. Freshman
Taylor Podschweit started the rally with a leadoff walk. A wild pitch and an RBI double by
Katie Kelly followed to put the Hounds on the board, while back-to-back singles from
Erika Goodwin and
Jessie Noone moved Kelly home.
Â
UIndy out hit the host Saints for the game, 6-4. Kelly and Noone each had two safeties, with the latter also earning a walk.
Â
GAME 2The capper looked to be another close one until the Hounds unloaded with four runs in the seventh. Up by just two heading into the final frame, the UIndy bats generated three doubles to fuel the surge. The biggest blow came with the bases loaded when
Brooke Riess cleared the bases with her two-bagger to left.
Â
Senior pitcher
Miranda Tamayo (11-1) got the complete-game win, allowing just one run and one walk while fanning seven.
Â
Noone went 3-for-3 at the plate,
Emma Varsbergs had a pair of hits and a pair of runs, and
Tayler Weck and
Natalie Lalich each chipped in a single and a double.
Â
The road trip doesn't get an easier for the Hounds as they travel across town to face eighth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
