ST. LOUIS – Wrapping up a tough road trip this weekend, the No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team split a pair of contests at eighth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis Sunday. Both games ended as one-run affairs, with the Greyhounds (42-3, 23-3 GLVC) taking game one, 3-2, and the host Tritons (46-4, 22-4) pulling out a 2-1 win in the capper.
Â
GAME 1
In the marquee matchup of the day (and perhaps the regular season), senior
Morgan Foley out-dueled fellow All-American pitcher Hannah Perrryman. The two seniors came into the day having combined for more than 3,100 career strikeouts, but it was Foley (31-1) that was the more dominant, striking out 18 while allowing two walks and only one hit.
Â
That lone hit came in the form of a two-out, two-run homer by junior Sara Kern in the fourth. The Tritons managed only two base runners in the other six innings combined.
Â
All of UIndy runs also came in a single frame, all coming on a bases-loaded double by centerfielder
Jessie Noone. Junior
Tayler Weck set the table with a leadoff double, good for the Hounds' first hit of the day. A perfectly-placed bunt by
Katie Kelly and a not-so-well fielded one by
Erika Goodwin followed, putting three on for Noone ahead of her game-winning knock.
Â
GAME 2
Foley (31-2) got the start again in game two and again allowed just two runs (one earned). However, the two runs proved just enough for the home team, as UMSL pitcher and Indiana-native Carly Kingery (6-2) limited the Hounds to a single tally in her complete-game win.
Â
Weck had a walk and an RBI single, driving in freshman
Emma Varsbergs in the second inning. Noone added a double and a single to finish the day with three hits.
Â
Just two dates remain on the Hounds' regular season schedule, starting with a Senior Day versus Truman Saturday, April 23.
