SOMERS, Wis. – The No. 19-ranked Greyhound baseball team wrapped up their weekend series with UW-Parkside on Sunday, splitting a pair of games against the Rangers.
Â
The Greyhound offense struggled to get going in game one, managing just two hits in a 3-0 defeat. In game two, the bats came alive for the Hounds as UIndy homered twice and scored five times in the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference in a 9-6 victory.
Â
The split moves UIndy to 25-10 on the year and 11-5 in the GLVC after the Hounds took three of four games. UW-Parkside sits at 6-25 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
Â
GAME ONE: UW-Parkside 3 – UIndy 0Â
The Greyhounds managed a first inning single from
Alex Ritchie and a second inning single from
Brady Thomas, but went hitless over the final five frames of the opener. UIndy's best chance to score came in the third, when
Devon Hensley and
Anthony Asalon reached via errors and advanced into scoring position with two outs before being stranded to end the inning.
Â
Parkside plated two runs in the first on a single from DJ Peltz and added another in the third on a RBI groundout from Kyohei Makita to cap the scoring. Tyler Jandron (2-3) earned the win for the Rangers, walking two and striking out five in a complete game shutout.
Â
Connor Mailloux (2-4) took the loss for the Greyhounds after surrendering two earned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Â
GAME TWO: UIndy 9 – UW-Parkside 6Â
Parkside jumped on UIndy starter
Michael Schalasky early in game two, plating a pair in the first thanks to a two-out double from Nick Janssen.
Â
The Greyhounds took advantage of a pair of Ranger errors in the second, getting on the board thanks to a two-out RBI single from
Devon Hensley. Two more Parkside errors in the fourth allowed
Storm Joop to score with two down, knotting things up at 2-2.
Â
Parkside's Zach Thompson put the hosts right back in front in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run. But two innings later, the Greyhounds took advantage of two more Parkside errors to take the lead for good.
Â
Joop led off the top of the sixth with his second home run of the year. After Hensley and
Anthony Asalon recorded back-to-back hits later in the inning to tie the game,
Alex Ritchie put the Hounds up 7-5 with a two-run shot, his fourth round tripper of the year.
Â
The Rangers answered with a run in their half of the sixth to cut the lead to one.
Joe Trennepohl gave the Greyhounds some much needed insurance with the bags full in the top of the ninth, singling home Joop and
Colin Hawk to cap the scoring.
Â
Dylan Stutsman (3-0) earned the win in relief for UIndy, tossing five brilliant innings of three-hit ball in which he allowed one walk and struck out three. Schalasky lasted four innings for the Hounds, allowing four earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in four innings.
Â
The Greyhounds wrap up their 10-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to St. Louis for a non-conference game against GLVC West Division opponent Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
