Baseball opens weekend with two shootout wins over Lewis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound baseball team picked up a pair of wild but critical divisional wins over Lewis University on Saturday, sweeping the Flyers by scores of 17-9 and 8-7, respectively.

The Hounds used a seven run third and 10-run fourth inning to put game one out of reach early. Game two was a tightly contested battle, but Colin Hawk's sixth inning RBI double proved to be the difference as UIndy moved to 18-6 on the year and 5-1 in the GLVC. Lewis saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 14-7 on the year and 4-2 in league play.

Kyle Orloff drove in eight runs on the day with five coming in the second contest. Joe Trennepohl had five RBI of his own. Hawk's five hits on the day led all Greyhounds while Anthony Asalon and Alex Ritchie scored five times each for UIndy on Saturday.

GAME ONE: UIndy 17 – Lewis 9

Down 1-0 early, the Greyhound bats erupted in the bottom of the third inning. After a lead off strikeout, seven straight Hounds reached base and scored with Trennepohl's third home run of the season putting an exclamation point on the inning to make it 7-1.

One inning later, the Greyhounds sent 15 players to the dish, recording six hits, drawing four walks and taking advantage of a pair of Lewis errors to put a 10-spot on the scoreboard. Eight different players drove in at least one run in the inning and when the smoke cleared, UIndy held their largest lead of the season to date at 17-1.

Lewis scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings and twice more in the ninth, but the early hole proved too deep to climb out of.

Matthew Kalpanis improved to 6-0 on the year after allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.

GAME TWO: Uindy 8 – Lewis 7

For the second straight game, the Greyhounds fell into an early 1-0 hole but got out of it in their first trip to the plate. Orloff put the Greyhounds in front with a two-run single and Trennepohl followed later in the in with an RBI single of his own to make it 3-1 UIndy.

Lewis cut the lead to one in the top of the third, but Trennepohl got the run right back with another run scoring single in the bottom of the inning.

The Flyers' Kurt Becker tied things up two batters into the fourth, launching a towering two-run home run over the right field wall. But once again, the Greyhounds answered in the bottom of the inning with Orloff doing major damage. With two outs and the bases loaded, the freshman slugger ripped a double into the left center field gap, allowing all three runners to score and make it 7-4 Hounds.

But the lead wouldn't last as Lewis plated a trio of runs in the top of the fifth to tie things up, setting the stage for Hawk's heroics in the sixth. With one out and Asalon on first, Hawk scorching one that landed on the left field foul line and allowed Asalon to come in and score.

UIndy had to fight off a seventh inning rally from the Flyers, but Dylan Stutsman (2-0) was able to get out of a jam with two runners in scoring position to give the Hounds the sweep.

Stutsman earned the win in relief of Shaw, who allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and four punch outs in five innings of work.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow at Greyhound Park, wrapping up the series with another double header. First pitch for game one is set for noon.
