Greyhounds wrap up eight game homestand with split against Lewis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound baseball team wrapped up a four-game series with Lewis University on Sunday, splitting a double header at Greyhound Park.

Joe Trennepohl's three hits and four RBI in the first game led the way as UIndy picked up an 11-6 win, their fourth in a row. In game two, the Flyers took their turn putting up big numbers, avoiding a four-game sweep with a 15-4, seven inning win.

The Greyhounds improved to 19-7 on the year and now sit atop the GLVC East Division with a 6-2 mark in league play. Lewis moved to 15-8 with the split and is 5-3 in conference play.

GAME ONE: UIndy 11 – Lewis 6

The Flyers jumped on UIndy starter Connor Mailloux early in game one, scoring twice in the first and once in the second on three RBI singles. After recording just three hits through the first three frames, the Greyhound bats came to life in the bottom of the fourth, putting a six spot on the scoreboard.

Seven straight Greyhounds reached base to open the inning and back-to-back doubles from Brady Thomas and Trennepohl brought the Hounds back to even. Dylan Jones' pinch-hit RBI single later in the inning put the Hounds in front and UIndy would tack on a pair of unearned runs later before the inning ended.

Lewis cut the Greyhounds' lead to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but UIndy answered with three in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI base knocks from Trennepohl and Asalon. After the Flyers plated another run in the sixth that made it a 9-6 game, Trennepohl and Kyle Orloff put game one out of reach with a pair of RBI hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Mailloux (2-2) lasted five innings on the hill for UIndy, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with a pair of walks and five Ks.

GAME TWO: Lewis 15 – Uindy 4 (7 inn.)

UIndy was able to overcome a pair of early deficits in game two, getting a leadoff home from Anthony Asalon in the first to tie the game and a two-run single from Orloff in the second that made it a 3-3 contest after two. But Lewis kept their bats rolling in the third, scoring eight times to break the game wide open.

Brendan Dudas recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, the final Greyhound hit of the afternoon. The Flyers added a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, closing out a contest that saw Lewis hitters connect for 13 hits off Greyhound pitching.

Michael Schalasky (2-2) took the loss for UIndy after allowing six earned runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in just 2 1/3 innings of work.

The Greyhounds will head out on the road for the first time in conference play, heading to Lebanon, Ill. for a four game set with McKendree on Apr. 8-9. History could be made next weekend, as UIndy head coach Gary Vaught sits just two wins shy of 900 for his career.

First pitch for Saturday's double header is set for 1:00 p.m eastern time
