INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 17 ranked Greyhound baseball team returned home on Saturday for a pair of GLVC East games against Bellarmine University on Senior Day at Greyhound Park.
Â
The Greyhounds battled back from down three runs in the opening game to earn a 4-3 win over the Knights with
Macy Holdsworth's walk-off single giving UIndy the win. Game two needed extra innings to be decided, several of them in fact, with Bellarmine emerging with a 4-1 win in 15 innings.
Â
UIndy moves to 26-12 on the year and 12-6 in the GLVC with the split while Bellarmine ran their record to 20-20 overall and 11-7 in league play.
Â
GAME ONE: UIndy 4 – Bellarmine 3Â
Bellarmine took advantage of a pair of UIndy errors in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Three innings later, the Knights got consecutive hits to lead off the fifth en route to a pair of insurance run and a 3-0 lead halfway through the game.
Â
Holdsworth led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and scored later in the inning on an RBI ground out from
Anthony Asalon. One inning later, the Hounds took advantage of two two-out Bellarmine miscues to even things up.
Â
After leading off the inning with a double,
Colin Hawk came in to score from third on a fielding error. Later in the inning, the Hounds pulled off a perfectly executed double steal attempt with
Brady Thomas swiping home while
Joe Trennepohl was in a rundown between first and second.
Â
Both offenses were kept quiet until the bottom of the ninth.
Storm Joop led off the inning with single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Following an intentional pass to Trennepohl, Holdsworth poked an 0-1 pitch through the left side and was mobbed by his teammates after Joop hustled home for the winning run.
Â
Matthew Kaplanis was brilliant over eight innings of work, scattering six hits and striking out three while allowing just one earned run.
Dylan Stutsman (4-0) picked up the win after striking out a pair of hitters in a perfect ninth.
Â
GAME TWO: Bellarmine 4 – Uindy 1 (15 inn.)Â
Once again, the Knights jumped out in front with an early run, this time with a pair of first inning doubles off UIndy starter
Jake Shaw. For five innings, the Greyhound offense lay dormant thanks to Bellarmine starter Hunter Spencer, who limited the Hounds to just one hit while preserving the lead.
Â
The Knights had a golden opportunity to add to the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with one just one out. Shaw would dig in on the mound and retire the next two batters to keep the Hounds within a run. UIndy's offense got the run they were looking for in the bottom of the inning when pinch hitter
Dylan Jones tucked a towering home run just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game.
Â
After Jones' blast, it would be nine innings before another runner would cross the plate but both teams had their chances in extras. Both teams left a pair of runners on in the eighth and 11
th innings, respectively. UIndy stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and Bellarmine would follow suit in the 12
th.
Â
The battle of attrition came to a close in the 15
th when the Knights plated three runs off three hits and retired the Hounds in order in the bottom of the inning.
Â
JT Terwilliger (0-1) took the loss after walking the only batter he faced, which proved to be the winning run. Shaw dazzled in nine innings of work, scattering seven hits and striking out six on 106 pitches.
Â
The two teams are back at it tomorrow at Greyhound Park with first pitch set for noon.
