Greyhounds earn two comeback wins, sweep Knights on Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 17 ranked Greyhound baseball team showed that they can win any style of ball game on Sunday against Bellarmine. UIndy was on the right side of a 3-1 pitcher's duel in the opener and earned walk off 15-14 shootout win in game two to take three-of-four games from the Knights over the weekend.

Colin Hawk was a force at the plate for the Greyhounds on Sunday, going 5-for-7 on the day with two home runs, seven runs driven in and a walk off hit by a pitch in game two. Macy Holdsworth had three hits and the first two home runs of his Greyhound career in game two.

Devon Hensley had five hits on the day and Dylan Jones blasted the game-tying homer in game two as the Hounds improved to 28-12 on the year and 14-6 in the GLVC. With the two losses, Bellarmine falls to 20-22 on the year and 11-7 in league play.

"I didn't even feel the ball hit me. Too much adrenaline." Hawk said with a laugh after game two. "But taking three of four from Bellarmine is big. Not just that we did it, but that we came from behind in all of the wins. We've been doing it all year and it shows that this team won't quit until the last out is recorded."

GAME ONE: UIndy 3 – Bellarmine 1

Bellarmine jumped out to an early lead thanks to a lead off single from Nick Wright, who would come in to score later in the inning on a double off the bat of Brady Pfaadt. It was the last time the Knights would threaten against UIndy starter Connor Mailloux, as the sophomore allowed just three base runners over the next four innings of work.

UIndy got the bats going with two outs in the third. After a one out single from Hensley and a two out walk to Alex Ritchie, Hawk smacked a double down the left field line that scored the lead runner. One batter later, Storm Joop plated both of his teammates with a single that hopped over a pair of Knights' infielders to make it a 3-1 game.

Mailloux (3-4) was lifted after 5 2/3 innings of work that saw him scatter five hits, walk two and strike out five. Dylan Stutsman took over and recorded the final four outs to earn his 10th save of the year.

GAME TWO: UIndy 15 – Bellarmine 14

Holdsworth opened the scoring in game two, taking the first pitch he saw and blasting a two-run shot over the left center field wall. Bellarmine answered with five runs in the top of the third, but the Hounds answered in the bottom of the inning when Hawk launched a one-out, three-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game at five.

The runs kept coming as Bellarmine scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. But each time, the Greyhounds had a counter punch, as they scored one in the fourth and twice in the fifth to even things up at eight with four innings to go.

UIndy jumped back in front in the bottom of the sixth when Asalon scored on Hawk's sacrifice fly to make it a 9-8 game. But the lead evaporated in a hurry as Bellarmine plated five unearned runs in the seventh, all coming with two outs.

Holdsworth cracked his second two-run shot of the day in the bottom of the seventh to get the Hounds within two at 13-11. Bellarmine added an insurance run in the eighth, but Hawk got it right back with a towering two-out solo home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to a pair.

The Knights went down in order in the ninth, and the Hounds made them pay in the bottom of the inning. Joe Trennepohl led off the inning with an infield single, bringing Jones to the dish. Just as he did one day earlier, the junior deposited a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to tie the game.

The wild ninth inning continued and saw Holdsworth get thrown out at home when he tried to score from second on a Hensley single. But the Hounds stayed patient at the plate and drew back-to-back walks to bring Hawk to the plate with two down. After falling behind 1-2 in the count, Hawk caught a fastball from John Hakemoller right between the shoulder blades that allowed the winning run to score.

Stutsman (5-0) earned the win for UIndy after working another 1 2/3 innings of spotless relief.

The Hounds head back out on the road for their next six games, starting on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a pair of non-conference games with Ohio Dominican. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
