Greyhounds open road trip with split against Panthers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 ranked University of Indianapolis baseball team opened up a six game road trip on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Panther Valley for a pair of games against Ohio Dominican. The Greyhounds came away with a non-conference split, taking the opener 6-2 before falling 6-5 in the second game.

Freshman Devon Hensley finished the day with five hits and five RBI, belting his fifth home run of the year in game one. Anthony Asalon had four hits and scored three times for the Greyhounds, who moved to 29-13 on the year with the split.

GAME ONE: UIndy 6 – Ohio Dominican 2

Hawk continued his torrid pace at the plate in the first inning, poking a one-out single through the left side of the infield to score Asalon and put the Hounds in front early. Ohio Dominican answered in their first trip to the plate, plating both of their runs off UIndy starter Pete Allen to take the lead.

Allen would settle down from there, keeping the Panthers off the board for the rest of the game. Hawk continued his tear in the top of the third, putting the Greyhounds on top for good with a two-run double that scored Macy Holdsworth and Alex Ritchie.

Hensley dealt the Panthers a crushing blow in the top of the fourth with a three run home run that put the game out of reach. It was the fifth home run of the year for the freshman center fielder.

Allen (1-0) took over from there, allowing just four hits over the final four innings to pick up the win in his first start of the year. The sophomore hurler went the distance, scattering 10 hits, walking one batter and fanning six.

GAME TWO: Ohio Dominican 6 - UIndy 5

Once again, the Panthers jumped out in front in their first trip to the plate with a solo home run from Justin Childers off starter JT Terwilliger. UIndy answered in their half of the third, with back-to-back RBI hits from Asalon and Brady Thomas that made it 2-1 Hounds.

Hensley added to the lead with RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, but Ohio Dominican got right back to within a run in the sixth, scoring twice to make it a 4-3 game.

The Greyhounds got a bit of insurance in the top of the seventh when Storm Joop came up with a two out RBI single that scored pinch runner LaWan Rollins from second. UIndy turned it over to Dylan Stutsman to nail down the save in the ninth, but the Panthers rallied for three runs on three hits and took advantage of one error, scoring the winning run on Colman Fitzgerald's walk-off RBI double.

Making his fifth appearance in the last six games, Stutsman (5-1) took his first loss of the year for the Hounds. Terwilliger made his first career start for the Greyhounds in game two, going five innings while giving up two earned runs on five hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

The Greyhounds will wrap up their final regular season road trip of the year this coming weekend, traveling to Springfield, Ill. for a four game set against Illinois Springfield. The Hounds and Prairie Stars will open up the weekend on Saturday afternoon with a double header that starts at 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
