LEBANON, Ill. – In a doubleheader rescheduled from Sunday, the No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team (36-1, 19-1 GLVC) earned a road sweep at McKendree Friday evening, downing the Bearcats 5-4 and 9-6. The Greyhounds earned a comeback win in game one and squelched a late rally to take the capper.
Â
The Hounds moved to 36-1 on the season, including a 19-1 mark in GLVC play.
Â
GAME 1UIndy erased a pair of two-run deficits on the way to a come-from-behind win in game one. The Hounds found themselves down 2-0 in the first and 4-2 in the third but bounced back each time.
Â
Still trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh and final frame, the Greyhounds loaded the bases with nobody out.
Tayler Weck (double),
Katie Kelly (single) and
Erika Goodwin (walk) set the stage for slugger
Natalie Lalich, who delivered a two-run double to put the Hounds ahead, ultimately for good.
Â
The Bearcats (17-21, 11-9) also loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but pitcher
Morgan Foley (27-0) struck out McKendree clean-up hitter Brooke Gajewski to secure the win. Gajewski was Foley's 13th strikeout victim of the game. Though she gave up a season-high four earned runs, the UIndy ace kept McKendree off the board for the final four innings and walked only one batter all game.
Â
Lalich homered in the contest, good for her team-leading 10th dinger of the season. Sophomore
Brooke Riess also went deep while adding a single.
Â
GAME 2The UIndy offense exploded for four runs in the third and four runs in the fifth to take control. Goodwin and Lalich each had a two-run double to fuel the rallies. After her two-bagger in the third, Goodwin added another double in the sixth on the way to a four-hit, three-run performance.
Â
Kelly had a pair of singles, while
Jessie Noone,
Emma Varsbergs and Weck each had an RBI single.
Â
UIndy starter
Miranda Tamayo battled through 6 1/3 innings before finally being chased in the seventh. Foley returned to the circle to get the final two outs and earn her first save of the year. Tamayo (9-1) garnered the win, striking out six while being charged with six runs.
Â
The Greyhounds head to the University of Illinois Springfield Saturday for a doubleheader with the Prairie Stars. First pitch in set for 1 p.m. ET.
