Hounds close out regular season road slate with split against Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The No. 18 ranked UIndy baseball team put the finishing touches on their regular season road schedule on Sunday, splitting a pair of games against Illinois Springfield.

The Prairie Stars took the first of two low scoring affairs, holding on for a 4-2 win in game one. The Hounds bounced back in game two, scoring in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to come away with a 4-1 victory.

UIndy moves to 31-15 on the year and enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 16-8 record in conference play. Illinois Springfield moves to 25-19 overall and 13-11 in the GLVC.

GAME ONE: Illinois Springfield 4 – UIndy 2

Hits were tough to come by in the opener as the two teams combined for just nine base knocks in the opener. But Illinois Springfield took advantage of a pair of errors to score all four of their runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.

UIndy's bats remained dormant through five innings before UIndy finally got on board in the sixth. With two outs and runners on the corners, the Hounds plated both runs on an error by the Prairie Stars' short stop to cut the lead in half. It was as close as the Hounds would come before the next four batters were retired to end the game.

Connor Mailloux (4-4) took the loss for UIndy after giving up four runs on five hits with two walks and five punch outs in a complete game effort.

GAME TWO: UIndy 4 – Illinois Springfield 1

Both starting pitchers were in total control to start game two, with UIndy's Michael Schalasky and the Prairie Stars' Adam Gregory combined to allow just three hits through four scoreless innings to start the game.

UIndy finally broke through in the top of the fifth, getting back-to-back two out doubles from Anthony Asalon and Alex Ritchie, with the latter scoring the former to put the Hounds in front. One inning later, the Greyhounds tacked on an insurance run when Macy Holdsworth brought Storm Joop home from third with a one out groundout.

The Greyhounds used the long ball to pad their lead in the seventh, getting solo home runs from Asalon and Colin Hawk to make it a 4-0 game. It Asalon's team leading eighth homer of the year and the fifth for Hawk.

Schalasky got the first two outs of the seventh with no problem, but the Prairie Stars were able to load the bags later in the inning. James Frascella was called on to get out of the jam, and did just that with an inning ending strikeout.

UIS got on the board with in the eighth, but couldn't muster a threat in the ninth as Dylan Stutsman notched his 11th save of the year.

Schalasky improved to 3-2 on the year after giving up five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.

The Greyhounds' regular season comes to an end next weekend, when the Hounds and Southern Indiana battle for the GLVC East Division title with four games at Greyhound Park. The series gets underway on Friday afternoon with a nine inning game. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
