Greyhounds' season ends with Midwest Regional defeat to host Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. - The Greyhound baseball team saw their 2016 campaign come to an end on Saturday at the hands of the top seed in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, the host Quincy University Hawks.

UIndy managed just six base hits and left 10 runners on base on the day. The Hounds were able to bring the tying run to the dish in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded and one out, but couldn't muster a run off Quincy closer Teddy Rule, who shut the door on a 5-1 Hawks win.

Brady Thomas went 2-for-4 and drove in the Greyhounds' lone run of the day. Alex Ritchie, Joe Trennepohl, Dylan Jones and Macy Holdsworth were the other Hounds to record base hits off Quincy pitching.

Colin Hawk (1-1) took the ball for the Greyhounds and gave up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work before being lifted from the game after getting hit in the hand during a bunt attempt in the sixth. Dylan Stutsman worked three innings of two hit ball in relief of Hawk.

Both Hawk and Quincy's Mark Niebrugge dominated through the first two innings but Quincy would get a pair of runs in the third to open the scoring. Troy Wehde led off the inning with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a single from Chris Ward, who would score later in the inning on another wild pitch.

The Hounds looked to counter punch in the top of the fourth, loaded the bases with one out after a Thomas single sandwiched between a pair of walks. Down 0-1 in the count, Dylan Jones connected on a deep fly ball that was destined to leave the yard. But the ball died in the wind blowing in from left and landed in the glove of Justin Blechle for the final out.

Quincy used a two-out rally to double their lead in the bottom of the fifth with David Jacob's two-run single extending the lead to 4-0. Blechle added to the lead with a solo shot in the sixth off Stutsman after the Hounds left a pair of runners on in the top of the inning.

With two down in the top of the eighth, the UIndy offense got on the board when Thomas roped a line drive down the left field line, scoring Ritchie on the play. The Hounds threatened again in the ninth after one out singles from Jones and Holdsworth, followed by a seven pitch walk to Brendan Dudas that loaded the bases for the top of the order.

That's where the rally would end as Rule reached back to get Anthony Asalon and Ritchie to strike out swinging to end the game.

Despite walking five, Niebrugge allowed just the one run on six hits with two strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings of work to earn the win.

UIndy finishes the year 38-21, picking up both the GLVC Tournament championship and a regional tournament win for the first time since 2012. Saturday's game marks the final time in a Greyhound uniform for 10 seniors: Hawk, Ritchie, Asalon, Thomas, Trennepohl, Matthew Kaplanis, Trevor Forde, JT Terwilliger, Scott Mitchell and James Frascella.
