Women’s golf takes runner-up at NCAA Championships

AURORA, Colo. – The UIndy women's golf team (300-286-293-304) capped its season with a runner-up finish at the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships. The 12-team, 72-hole championship was held at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.

Twelve months after topping the leaderboard at nationals, the Greyhounds secured another top-three finish for an encore to last year's team national championship – the first in the school's history.

UIndy needed a stellar finish to take second place outright. With Nova Southeastern in the clubhouse at +31, Katharina Keilich and Paxton DeHaven, the final two Hounds on the course, each birdied 18 to help their team finish at +30 and leapfrog the Sharks for second, nine strokes back of winner Rollins College.

Keilich (76-72-70-73) led the way for the Hounds. Competing in her first DII Championships, the freshman from Wetzlar, Germany finished at +3 for the tournament to take sole possession of fifth place. After a first-round 76, Keilich shot one-under par for the final 54 holes, highlighted by a third-round 70.

DeHaven (77-73-70-74) also placed in the top 10, tying for seventh among DII's best golfers. The sophomore from Seymour, Ind., capped her tournament with a two-over 74, punctuated by her clutch bird on the final hole.

Senior Brooke Beegle (74-70-76-79) tied for 20th place at her final collegiate event. Sophomore Kylie Raines (73-71-76-81) shared 28th place, while senior Molly Ward (81-78-83-78) finished 65th.

Rollins, last year's runner-up, finished with a four-round team score of 1173 (290-288-293-302) to capture its record sixth Division II women's golf title. Grand Valley State's Gabrielle Shipley (73-70-70-69) took the individual crown, besting Findlay's Kasey Petty by a single stroke.

DAY 3
The UIndy women's golf team (300-286-292) remained in second place after Friday's third round at the NCAA Division II Championships. The defending national-champion Greyhounds shaved another stroke off the lead and will head into Saturday's final round seven shots back of leader Rollins College (290-288-293).

UIndy followed yesterday's school-record 286 with another solid score Friday. The Hounds combined for a 292, fueled by matching two-under 70s by freshman Katharina Keilich (76-72-70) and sophomore Paxton DeHaven (77-73-70).

Keilich has climbed into the top 10, sharing seventh place with 18 holes to go. DeHaven is tied for 13th, as are teammates Kyle Raines (73-71-76) and Brooke Beegle (74-70-76). Senior Molly Ward (81-78-80) is tied for 68th.

Rollins, last year's runner-up, finished with a 293 Friday to earn a seven-stroke advantage heading into the final round. Meanwhile, the individual national championship race is even tighter, as Tarleton State's Isabell Jimenez Pena, Findlay's Kasey Petty and Grand Valley State's Gabrielle Shipley are all tied for the lead at -3.

DAY 2
The UIndy women's golf team (300-286) used a school-record team score Thursday to vault into second place at the halfway point of the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships. The defending national-champion Greyhounds combined to card a two-under 286 on day two, finishing the round at 10 overall to sit eight strokes back of leader Rollins College (290-288).

The 12-team, 72-hole championship is being held at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo., May 18-21. Third-round action continues Friday. Follow live results here.

UIndy's second-round 286 topped the previous program low by two strokes, set in September of 2012. Four Hounds shot +1 or better on the day, led by a two-under 70 by senior Brooke Beegle (74-70).

Head coach Brent Nicoson certainly liked the results Thursday, but explained that the team's game plan never changed from the onset.

"We actually hit it well yesterday, we just didn't putt very well. (Today) we just stuck to the game plan and didn't change anything," said Nicoson. "We said if we kept hitting the greens like we did, the putts would start falling. I asked them to go out and do one thing today, and they did it. I'm proud of them."

A native Fishers, Ind., Beegle settled at even par through 36 holes to share sixth place with teammate Kylie Raines. The latter followed a first-round 73 with a 71 Thursday, as both she and Beegle are just three shots back of the individual lead.

Freshman Katharina Keilich (76-72) and sophomore Paxton DeHaven (77-73) each made a four-stroke improvement over their respective first-round scores. Both are currently in the top 25, with Keilich in 16th and DeHaven in 22nd.

Senior Molly Ward (81-78) rounded out UIndy's scoring with a second-round 78 to sit at 64th.
