GOLDEN, Colo. – The sixth-ranked Wayne State College Wildcats proved too much for the UIndy volleyball team Saturday, as the Greyhounds lost 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-12) in their third match of the Oredigger Classic, hosted by Colorado Mines.
In only the second meeting ever between the two programs, the Hounds (1-2) were hindered by numerous miscues, finishing the match with 26 attack errors, nine receiving errors and six service errors.
The match opened with a short span of back-and-forth action, as the Greyhounds and No. 6 Wildcats traded point for point. With UIndy up 5-4, Wayne State tore off a 6-0 run that forced an early timeout from Head Coach
Jason Reed. Leading 10-5, the Wildcats went on to claim 15 of the next 22 points to win the opener, 25-12, hitting .458 (12-1-24) as a team.
The following set began much like the first, as the Hounds went toe-to-toe with the nationally-ranked opposition until a quick spurt gave the Wildcats a 14-9 lead. Wayne State kept the Hounds at arm's length the remainder of the set, winning 25-16.
It was much of the same in the decisive third frame, as the UIndy attack faltered in a minus-.121 attack effort (6-10-33) compared to the Wildcats' .304 (9-2-23).
UIndy finished with 24 kills and 26 errors on 88 swings (-.023), and No. 6 Wayne State recorded 30 kills and just six errors on 73 attacks (.329).
The Greyhounds close their opening weekend with a 6:30 p.m. ET meeting with Colorado Mesa.
