Three-point record falls as UIndy routs Missouri S&T, 114-83

INDIANAPOLIS – It had been more than a month since the UIndy men's basketball team played on their home court, and in Thursday night's win over Missouri S&T the Greyhounds made it worth the wait by treating the Nicoson Hall fans to a dazzling offensive display en route to a 114-83 blowout.

UIndy (6-7, 3-2 GLVC) – now winners of three straight – set the program's single-game record for 3-pointers with 20, knocking them down at a ridiculous 58.8% clip.

A good portion of those triples came from junior Eric Davidson, as he set a personal-best with eight 3-pointers, just two shy of the program's single-game mark for an individual. Celebrating his 21st birthday, it was only fitting the Fishers, Ind., native had a performance to remember with 32 points on 8 of 10 3-point shooting.

"I thought about it before the game, I figured, 'it's my birthday, I might as well have a big game'," Davidson said lightheartedly, when asked about it afterward. "Really I'm just glad to help my team get the win."

Missouri S&T (7-6, 1-5) simply had no answer for the Hounds, who finished the game with season highs in points, field goals (41), field goal percentage (63.1) and 3-point percentage. UIndy's 114 points were the most the team has scored since putting up 118 against Saint Joseph's back on Jan. 20, 2014.

Individually, six Greyhounds tallied double figures, including Davidson, freshman Tate Hall (19 points), redshirt-junior Alex Etherington (17), redshirt-junior Ajay Lawton (12), sophomore Jesse Kempson (12) and freshman Micah Rosser (11).

The Greyhounds came out on an absolute tear right out of the gate, draining their first six 3-pointers to race out to a 22-13 lead. After leading the Hounds in scoring last Saturday, Etherington continued his hot hand with eight of those early UIndy points.

Although the Hounds eventually missed from deep, they continued to pour it in at a remarkable rate, finishing the opening period 21 of 33 (63.6%) overall and 10 of 16 (62.5%) from long range.

Despite this, the visiting Miners hung in the game thanks to some sharp shooting of their own, going 18 of 35 (51.4%) from the field with seven 3-pointers. Junior guard Jalen Myers scored 16 first-half points alone on a 4-for-5 clip from deep.

The electrifying first half lasted quite literally from tip-off until the final buzzer. On the final play of the period, Davidson made a heads-up pass to Lawton in transition, who laid it in as the horn sounded, sending the Hounds into the break up 55-44.

The second period belonged to Davidson, who scored 24 of his 32 points in the half while going 6 of 7 from a seemingly boundless 3-point range. He did that damage in just 7:26 of game time, scoring all 24 points during a 28-18 UIndy run before being pulled with about 11 minutes remaining on the game clock.

"I hit that first three in the second half, and then I hit another one, so once I saw two go in I was feeling really good with my shot," Davidson noted. "I credit my teammates for finding me all night."

While Davidson's effort stole the stat sheet headline, several other Greyhounds turned in excellent performances in Thursday's rout.

Rosser's 11 points and three assists marked collegiate highs for the Kentwood, Mich., product, who saw his first action of the season last week.

Etherington scored 17 for the second game in a row, knocking down a season-high four 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Lawton continued to flourish off the bench, totaling 12 points, six dimes, three boards, three steals and a career-high two blocks in 30 minutes.

Hall followed Davidson with 19 total points – 12 of which came in the second half – and also recorded six rebounds and five assists.

UIndy will need a similarly impressive effort Saturday when it meets Drury. The Panthers (11-3, 4-2) and Hounds are set for a 3:15 p.m. ET tip in Nicoson Hall.
