ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team turned in another quality road performance on Saturday, walking out of Moloney Arena with a 74-61 win over Maryville University.
Â
The Greyhounds (9-5, 3-1 GLVC) shot 54.9 percent from the floor and led wire-to-wire to down the Saints (4-7, 0-4 GLVC) and notch their second win in a row. The road win also gives UIndy six wins away from Nicoson Hall in 2016-17, surpassing last year's total number of wins away from home.
Â
Martha Burse led the Hounds in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting. Eight Greyhounds had at least four points on the night and as a team, UIndy assisted on 18 of their 28 field goals on the day.
Â
"We really moved the ball well and they shared it and it showed," Head coach
Kristin Drabyn said after the game. "We got the ball inside when we needed to, set good screens and took good shots. Our starters did a great job and we got some wonderful contributions from our bench, which is something we've been missing at times. Our kids have continued to mature and they've played really hard to keep getting wins on the road."
Â
A layup from Burse 13 seconds into the game put UIndy on top for good as the Hounds opened the contest with six of the first seven points. Maryville cut the lead down to one late in the first, but a layup from Burse and three-point play from Anderson right before the buzzer gave UIndy an 18-12 lead after one.
Â
Back-to-back threes from
Sarah Costello and
Jordan Cole to open the second quarter pushed the UIndy lead to double figures for the first time. The lead would fall back into single digits midway through the quarter, but a 10-2 Greyhound run kept the Saints at bay as UIndy would take a 44-34 lead into the break.
Â
The Hounds shot a red-hot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the floor in the opening half, their best 20 minute shooting performance to date this year.
Â
Three straight buckets from Burse, Costello and Anderson to open the second half gave the Hounds their biggest lead of the game at 50-34. UIndy's lead never dropped below 10 points the rest of the way as the Hounds coasted to victory.
Â
The Greyhounds went 28-for-51 on the day, 5-for-16 from long range and 13-for-19 from the free throw line. Costello (13) and Anderson (11) both joined Burse in double figures while
Tristan Philpot and
Ashley Montanez recorded season highs in scoring off the bench, chipping in with seven and six points, respectively.
Â
At the other end of the floor, Maryville shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the field, going 8-for-19 from deep and 9-for-13 from the line. Mary Barton and Stephanie Sherwood had 17 points each to lead the way.
Â
Anderson's nine rebounds led all players as both teams grabbed 29 boards each. Seven different Greyhounds finished with at least one assist on the day, led by four helpers from
Sarah Costello. The Greyhounds won the turnover battle for just the second time this year, 17-13, with Burse finishing with five steals for the second straight contest.
Â
The Greyhounds return home next week for their first conference home games of the year, starting next Thursday (Jan. 12) against Missouri S&T. Tip-off from Nicoson Hall is set for 5:30 p.m.
