Greyhounds fall to Grand Valley on final day of Crossover

AURORA, Ill. – The UIndy volleyball team completed its schedule at the 10th annual Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon with a loss to GLIAC member Grand Valley State. The Greyhounds drop to 11-10 on the season with the four-set loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set proved to be an exciting one against the Lakers. UIndy recorded 20 kills on .302 hitting as a team. Grand Valley led most of the opening frame and gained four-point advantage midway through. Katie Furlong and Julia Kruzan recorded kills to stop the Laker rally, and later back-to-back kills by Katie Voelz and Anna Fehribach evened the set at 22 apiece. After Grand Valley had match point, Kruzan added another kill to tie it. The Lakers fended off the Greyhounds for a final comeback to win, 27-25.

UIndy fought back after the opening-set loss, earning the first three points and five of the first seven. Kills by Rachel Irbe, Mary Grace Ertel, and Teigan Flaws grew the Greyhound lead to 12-6 before the Lakers would eventually knot the score up at 13. The Greyhounds would score seven of the final nine points, however, to win, 25-19.

The Greyhounds and Lakers traded points throughout the third set until the latter scored four in a row to lead, 22-18. Kruzan and Fehribach recorded kills late, but it wasn't enough as Grand Valley looked to close the match out in the fourth set. The fourth frame mirrored the previous set, as the Lakers used rallies to grow a big enough lead to avoid a Greyhound comeback. Irbe spoiled Grand Valley's serve to win, but the Lakers would close it out immediately after.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fehribach reached double-digit kills for the 11th time in 2017, as the total also led the Greyhounds. It is the fourth time the sophomore has led the team in kills.

Olivia Martin had another 23 digs in the loss, averaging 4.50 per set at the crossover. The freshman now has the fourth-highest dig total for a rookie in Greyhound history with 405.

As a team, UIndy had seven service aces against the Lakes, the second-highest mark of the season. Alexis Waugh and Martin each had two to lead the Greyhounds.

Voelz had the lone solo block for UIndy, her 12th of the season and her ninth in the past 12 matches. The junior is the only Greyhound in double-digits in the category.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Jason Reed: "We had a tough weekend [at the Crossover]. We were set up to play some great competition and showed some impressive things at times. Our consistency just wasn't there and it cost us."

"We had some great individual performances. At times we really controlled the tempo of the match, but we can't let up against good times like this. We know what to say and we know how to execute, but we just need to actually do it. We will take these losses, grow from each of them, and get back to work next week."
