#6 Greyhounds match best-ever start with second straight shutout win

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Off to its best start since 1953, the sixth-ranked UIndy football team (8-0, 5-0) earned its second straight shutout with a 45-0 rout of host Lincoln University (1-6, 0-4) Saturday night. The Greyhounds have now won their last 12 games dating back to last season, matching a 63-year-old program record for consecutive wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Seven days after blanking Quincy University, UIndy orchestrated back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1983, holding the Blue Tigers to just 163 total yards, including a UIndy opponent season-low 24 yards on the ground.

Leading 7-0 at the first quarter break, the Greyhounds used a 21-point second quarter to pull away, with two scores coming from freshman running back Al McKeller in the period. UIndy tacked on second-half touchdowns from Malik Higgins and Andrew Walker, as well as a 22-yard field goal from Brad Schickel.

Quarterback Jake Purichia finished 19 for 28 passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a rushing TD. Back-up QB Bryce Stancombe played the entire fourth quarter, completing his only pass attempt of the night – an 18-yard completion to Daveon Bell.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lincoln, who had eight three-and-outs on the night, did not earn a first down until its sixth possession, some 22 minutes into the game … senior Garrett Willis led all receivers with seven catches for 114 yards and a TD, good for his third 100-yard receiving game of the season … Walker's fourth-quarter score gave him 37 rushing touchdowns for his career – one shy of the program record … senior Tuwan Payton paced the Hounds with 115 all-purpose yards (99 rec, 16 rush) … redshirt-freshman Joe Lambright had a team-high seven tackles, while Rondell Weathers, Dillon Dallas and Jacob Schmatz were each credited with two tackles for a loss.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Bob Bartolomeo on the team's success:
"Winning's great, but we got to win next week…All these things we've done have been tremendous, don't get me wrong, but we got to win next week, and we've got a lot of work to do in terms of our attitude on the field."

MORE NOTES
For the second straight year, the Greyhounds used a 21-point quarter to take control and ultimately defeat Lincoln. Last season, the Hounds scored three TDs in the third quarter in a 38-7 win … UIndy has held all five GLVC opponents this season to less than 20 points, winning by an average score of 41-9 … the last time the Hounds shut out back-to-back opponents came under UIndy Hall of Fame Coach Bill Bless, whose 1983 squad defeated Ferris State at Key Stadium, 30-0, before going on the road to Ashland, 10-0.

UP NEXT
UIndy plays its final road game of the regular season when it travels to the Kansas City area for a showdown at William Jewell College Saturday, Oct. 28.
