EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The UIndy volleyball team ended its seven-match losing streak against the team that began it on Tuesday evening, as the Greyhounds fended off Southern Indiana in five sets. The win improves UIndy to 13-17 on the season and 8-9 in GLVC play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds cruised to the first-set victory, 25-14. A balanced attack gave UIndy the 14-8 lead, as five Greyhounds recorded a kill.
Lauren Koopman was the sixth player to have a kill in the set, as the team had 19 on .405 hitting.
Teigan Flaws and
Rachel Irbe each had five kills in the frame, while
Anna Fehribach had four.
Â
A 5-0 run early in the second set helped fuel the team to a 25-22 victory.
Alexis Waugh had her second kill of the night directly after another Fehribach kill to help the team lead 8-5. The Screaming Eagles got within one, but Flaws and Fehribach put the set away to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
It looked like UIndy would sweep Southern Indiana as it led 20-14 in the third set, but the home team scored six straight points and earned eight of 10 rallies to tie the frame at 22. The Screaming Eagles rode the momentum to the 25-22 win. Irbe led the Greyhounds with six kills in the set.
Â
Southern Indiana gained a big enough advantage in the fourth set that a 5-0 run by UIndy failed to phase the hosts. The Screaming Eagles led most of the set to force a fifth frame. The Greyhounds hit .421 in the deciding set and won, 15-13, to win its first match since October 20. Fehribach recorded her 17th kill of the night to end the match.
Â
Fehribach and Irbe each led the team with 17 kills apiece, while Flaws added 15.
Kailey Kleinert had five herself, while Koopman finished with four. Waugh added three kills.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Waugh had 52 assists in the win, the highest in a match of her career. Her previous best was 49 during her sophomore season at Hillsdale. The senior also surpassed her single-season personal record in assists of 627. The Indianapolis native now has 637 in 2017 with at least one match remaining for the Greyhounds.
Â
It is the first time this season that UIndy has had three players record at least 15 kills in a match. Fehribach and Flaws each set a new personal-best in a match with their respective totals, and Irbe matched her previous-best mark that was first set on October 7 against William Jewell.
Â
Four Greyhounds had double-digit digs, including
Olivia Martin, who returns from a six-match absence. The freshman led the team with 21, while
Jena Davis and Irbe recorded 15 apiece. Waugh added 10 to her line, joining Irbe as the first Greyhound duo to have a double-double in the same contest this season. It is also the first time in 2017 that four players have had at least 10 digs.
Â
Flaws has now recorded double-digit kills in three of the past four matches and is only a pair away from 200 this season. Fehribach leads the team with 285 kills, and has nearly doubled her total from her freshman campaign a year ago.
