The UIndy men's basketball team caps off the 2017 calendar year with a tilt against No. 9 Barry University on Tuesday night in Nicoson Hall. Tuesday will mark the third time in four years the Hounds and Bucs will square off on the hardwood, with each team splitting the previous two battles. UIndy and Barry have played five games in the teams' history, with the Greyhounds holding slight advantage with three victories. This will be Barry's first trip to Indianapolis.
ABOUT THE BUCCANEERSÂ
- Barry is ranked No. 9 in the NABC (coaches) poll and 10 in the D2SIDA poll.
- Fifth-year coach Butch Estes won his 100th game at Barry in the Buccaneers' 107-103 2OT win at Tampa last Saturday.Â
- Senior point guard Elvar Fridriksson is 24 assists away from breaking - Ryan Saunders' school record for assists (578).Â
- Fridriksson has 555 entering the game at UIndy. The Buccaneers beat Auburn, 100-95, in OT in an exhibition game this season.Â
- This is the sixth meeting between Barry and Indianapolis … The Bucs won the last time, 110-83, on Dec. 19, 2016 in Miami Shores, Fla. … Barry is 2-3 vs. the Greyhounds in the series.
- Junior guard Sawyer Glick has hit two end-of- regulation buzzer-beating three-pointers this year to send the game into OT … He canned a triple at the buzzer in the win over Auburn … He hit another three at the end of regulation in the 2OT win at Tampa on Dec. 9.
- The Bucs rank in the top 10 of several categories in NCAA Division II: second in three-pointers per game (14.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.85); third in assists per game (22.0); fifth in free-throw percentage (81.2%); sixth in scoring offense (97.3); and seventh in scoring margin (19.0) and three-point percentage (44.3%).
LAST TIME OUT (12/19/16)
Although the Greyhounds put together a commendable offensive effort, they couldn't keep pace with one of the best attacks in all of Division II. The Bucs entered Monday ranked in the top ten in the nation in scoring offense, assists per game, assist-to-turnover ratio and field goal percentage, and upped each of those numbers in their win against UIndy.
Barry's senior forward Adrian Gonzalez dropped a career-high 37 points, leading the charge as the home side finished with a 67.7 (42-62) shooting percentage – good for the second best mark in program history. Within the perimeter, the Bucs sank 32 of 38 (84.2%).
The Hounds started off well, leading 13-12 at the first media break thanks to efficient scoring from sophomore
Jimmy King. Midway through the first half, the Bucs used a 14-5 stretch to take their first double-digit lead of the night, 36-26, with less than seven minutes on the clock. By the time the halftime horn sounded, Barry held a 54-43 advantage.
The Bucs scored an absurd 1.45 points per possession in the opening half, hitting 19 of 28 (67.9%) overall and half of their 3-pointers.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the Hounds couldn't stay step-for-step with the Bucs down the stretch. UIndy got as close as 10 after an
Alex Etherington layup five minutes into the period, but Gonzalez hit one of his 17 field goals on the ensuing possession to widen the lead back to 12. Barry's biggest lead of the night was 28 at 98-74 with just over five minutes left.
Junior transfer D.J. Davis had one of his best performances of the season, hitting 8 of 13 to score a career-best 20 points in 27 minutes. He also led the Hounds with five assists and two steals. Four others finished in double figures, including Etherington (13 points),
Eric Davidson (11),
Tate Hall (10) and King (10).

WHAT HAPPENED LAST GAME? (vs. Salem)
Turnovers and defensive breakdowns forced coach
Stan Gouard to take two timeouts in the first half. Davidson hit front-iron on his first attempt before sinking the second. With the half winding down, Davidson hit his first three-pointer of the day in the team's final possession, but the Tigers countered before the buzzer to cut the Greyhound lead to 42-37 at the break.
Â
The second half started out strong for the Hounds with
Jesse Kempson getting an early bucket from
Devin Dixon and Davidson hitting his second three of the day just a couple plays later. The Hounds could not put the Tigers away as they went into the under-eight media timeout only holding a three-point lead. UIndy took a timeout with 31.2 seconds to go, trailing by a point. Coming out of the break,
Jesse Kempson hit a layup to give the Hounds a one-point lead with 15.3 seconds left, one the team would not squander to hold onto the victory.
ROSTER CHANGESÂ Â Â
The UIndy coaching staff added a mid-season transfer after finals concluded last week, as
Martell Miller joins the Hounds for what will be his second game in the crimson and grey after contributing to the win last Saturday against Salem. Miller attended Kennedy King Junior College his first two collegiate basketball seasons, averaging over 14 points per game. The junior guard is from Harvey, Ill.Â
SPRINTING OUT OF THE GATE
The Hounds have led at halftime in each of their first 10 games this season, with close losses against Northwood, Southern Indiana, and Lewis. The first two losses of the season - Northwood and Southern Indiana - were by a combined eight points, while the setback at Lewis came in overtime.Â
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
-
Eric Davidson is second in the country in free-throw percentage, as he is a near-perfect 31-for-32 (.969). Â The senior is also 35th in three-point percentage, shooting 47.3 percent from behind the arc.
-
Trevor Lakes would be sixth in the country in three-point percentage with his 57.5 percent clip, but is two made field goals from meeting the NCAA minimum requirement. The freshman is 23-for-40 in his rookie campaign.Â
-
Ajay Lawton would also rank in the top-50 in assists per game with his 5.2 mark, but has not played the past five games. The senior is still recovering from an injury that has plagued him since prior to Thanksgiving.Â
- As a unit, the Greyhounds rank 91st in Division II with 82.2 points per game. There are currently four teams averaging over 100 points each contest.
- UIndy is a top-10 squad in three-point percentage, sinking 43.9 percent of its attempts from long range.Â
