INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy men's tennis fell 5-4 Friday evening against crosstown Division I foe Butler.
The Greyhounds (1-1) led 3-0 after doubles, but the visiting Bulldogs (4-2), who were coming off a solid 6-1 win against Southern Indiana, won five of six singles bouts to rally back and steal the victory.
In doubles action,
Nils Hoffacker and
Marco Razo opened the scoring with an 8-2 victory against Butler's Spencer Lang and Alex Woldmoe in No. 3.
At No. 2,
Christoph Drechsler and
Magnus Mueller handed Ari Gerstein and Aviv Ben Shabat an 8-5 defeat, and UIndy's top duo of
Arklon Huertas del Pino and
Andrea Morlet followed with an impressive win at No. 1
The Greyhound duo defeated Butler's Mikheil Khmiadashvil and Mason Dragos, who were recently ranked No. 26 among Division I doubles teams, 8-6.
Once singles play began, the 'Dogs started their comeback.
Butler picked up wins in singles Nos. 2-6, ceding only the No. 1 singles bout between Huertas del Pino and Shabat. The Greyhound senior dropped Shabat in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, improving to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in dual matches.
UIndy hits the road for its first match away from the Tennis Center next week, traveling to the Bluegrass State to meet Eastern Kentucky Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
