Parkside escapes with 66-62 win on Senior Day

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Nicole Anderson poured in a game-high 27 Saturday but it was not enough, as the UIndy women's basketball team (15-12, 9-8 GLVC) fell, 66-62, to UW-Parkside (10-15, 8-9 GLVC) in the final regular-season home game. Anderson and fellow-upperclassman Emily Thomas were both recognized prior to the game as part of the Greyhounds' annual Senior Day festivities.

Neither team held a lead larger than five points on the afternoon, exchanging eight ties and 18 lead changes over the course of the game. But UIndy went 1-for-5 from the floor over the final 2:30, allowing Parkside to close out the game on an 11-5 run to snatch the victory.

Both teams came ready to shoot the ball, with UIndy going 8-for-11 from the floor in the first and Parkside knocking down 7-of-12 field goals. UIndy held a slim 19-17 lead after one quarter of action with a late layup from Jordan Cole providing the difference as the teams headed into the second quarter.

The second quarter featured another five lead changes, but buckets were a little tougher to come by in the period. A layup from Anderson with five seconds left in the half gave the Greyhounds a 32-30 advantage when the teams went into the locker room for the break.

UIndy connected at a 51.9 percent (14-for-27) rate in the opening half while Parkside shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) over the opening 20 minutes.

Five straight points from Parkside to open the third quarter gave the Rangers a lead but it would be a brief one as UIndy answered with back-to-back layups from Anderson and Martha Burse to re-take the lead at 36-35 with 7:32 left in the quarter. However, Parkside would re-take the lead on their next possession and hold it throughout the rest of the third quarter.

A 5-0 run early in the fourth quarter put UIndy in front 52-50 with 7:55 to play. The teams traded brief 5-0 runs with the Hounds taking a 57-55 lead after a three-point play from Jordan Cole with 2:53 to go. It was the last time UIndy held the lead as the offense dried up the rest of the way.

Back-to-back threes from Blair Arthur made it 61-57, giving the Rangers the lead for good. Parkside went 5-for-6 from the line down the stretch, with the last two from Brittany Fair putting the game out of reach with seven seconds left.

UIndy went 9-for-26 in the second half to finish the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-for-52) on the day. Sydney Brackemyre joined Anderson in double figures with 15 points in her second game back after a seven-game layoff.

Parkside got a career-high 19 points from Lauren Boerger and another 13 from Kauri Jensen off the bench. The Rangers shot 46.2 percent (24-for-52) on the afternoon, going 6-for-19 from deep and 12-for-14 from the charity stripe.

Brackemyre led all Greyhounds with six rebounds. Anderson and Cole had five boards each as UIndy finished with a slim 29-28 advantage on the glass.

The Greyhounds have one more regular season game, coming up on Thursday night on the road against the Saint Joseph's College Pumas. UIndy has plenty to play for in that one, as a win clinches the Hounds an opening round home game in the GLVC Tournament.

Tip-off from Rensselaer, Ind. is set for 6:30 p.m.
