EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Freshman
Reid Werner tossed allowed just six hits over seven scoreless innings of work to earn his first career win in a 5-0 blanking of Wayne State University on Sunday afternoon at the Dunn Hospitality Invitational. That was more than enough to help the No. 24-ranked Greyhounds win their fourth straight game overall, the last two coming against a pair of in-region opponents.
Devon Hensley had two of the Greyhounds' (6-2) six hits on the day and drove in a pair of runs with a double. Despite a season-low for hits in a game, the Hounds limited Wayne State (4-2) to just seven hits and played perfect defense to earn the shutout.
Werner was able to work out of trouble in the first and second innings. After leaving two runners on in the top of the first, he got a little help to keep the Warriors off the board in the second when Hensley gunned down a runner trying to score on a two-out singe to keep the game scoreless.
Blake Richardson picked his pitcher up in the bottom of the inning with a single to right that brought
John Eberhardt home and made it a 1-0 game.
That proved to be all the Greyhounds' young hurler would need in support, as Werner retired the next six batters he faced and allowed just two hits over his final five innings of work. But insurance would come in the bottom of the fourth in the form of a two-out rally. With two runners in scoring position, Hensley made it 3-0 with a double to the gap in right center.
Storm Joop brought Hensley in one batter later with a single and would score himself later in the inning when the left fielder misplayed
Nick Miller's single, allowing Joop to score all the way from first.
After Werner was lifted,
Chris Boettcher and
Dylan Stutsman took over and combined to allow one hit over the final two innings.
Following their successful trip south, the Greyhounds return home next week for a pair of nine-inning games against Oakland City University. The Hounds and Oaks kick things off on Friday, Mar. 3 at Greyhound Park. First pitch is set for noon.
