Greyhounds stumped by Florida Southern in 8-4 loss at Key

INDIANAPOLIS – Just days after scoring a program-record 25 goals against Ohio Valley, the UIndy men's lacrosse team was stifled in an 8-4 defeat by Florida Southern on a chilly Saturday at Key Stadium.

The visiting Mocassins (4-3) were led by senior keeper Matt Lalli, the defending USILA Division II Defensive Player of the Week, who racked up 16 saves.

UIndy (2-3) was held to a season-low goal total in the loss, scoring the second fewest in any game in program history.

The Mocs' first tally came roughly five minutes into the game, and they doubled their lead later in the period by capitalizing on a Greyhound turnover during a man-up opportunity.

Florida Southern pushed the lead up to 4-0 in the second quarter after scores from Kevin Dyer and Tyler Kopen.

The Hounds finally cracked the Mocs' defense toward the end of the first half, as sophomore Parker Kump netted his 12th goal of the season off a feed from junior Sam Horning.

Roughly one minute later sophomore Matthew Johnson scored out of a timeout, breathing life into the home side while bringing the deficit down to 4-2.

It was short-lived, however, as FSC's Kevin Dyer potted his second goal with less than 10 seconds on the clock, giving the Mocs a 5-2 halftime lead.

Florida Southern increased its lead with three goals in the third period, carrying an 8-2 advantage into the final quarter.

Lalli turned away seven Greyhound shots in the fourth, keeping UIndy off the board until two late goals in the final minute.

UIndy finished with 40 shots to Florida Southern's 30, but put only half on goal. The Hounds also suffered a season-high 21 turnovers.

Defensively, junior Max Groves finished with seven caused turnovers, setting a new program standard.

The Hounds finished with 31 ground balls to the Mocs' 22, led by Groves' five. A host of Hounds finished with three ground balls, including Johnson, sophomors Max Gerhardt, Adam Dobis and Eric Lounds, and juniors Jake Wittmeyer and Kenny Keyes.

In goal, sophomore Jarod Kimble finished with nine saves.

UIndy returns to action March 19, hosting Wheeling Jesuit at Key Stadium for a 2 p.m. ET start. It is the second game of this season's lone doubleheader with women's lacrosse. The Greyhound women also host Wheeling Jesuit, starting at 11 a.m.
