INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's lacrosse team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Wheeling Jesuit University 8-6 Sunday at Key Stadium, improving to 3-3 overall this season.
Down 3-1 after one quarter, the Greyhounds responded by scoring six of the next seven goals, and held off a late push from the visiting Cardinals (1-6) in the fourth to secure the win and cap UIndy's lone women's/men's home lacrosse doubleheader of the season.
Sophomore
Eric Lounds scored an unassisted goal in the first period, but it was Wheeling Jesuit that led after 15 minutes thanks to a pair of goals from leading-scorer Dereck Downs and another from Hayden Binnix.
In the second quarter, UIndy dominated possession and slowly climbed back into the game with a pair of goals from unlikely sources.
After an extensive possession that ate up more than four minutes of game clock, sophomore reserve
Scott LaPoe found the back of the net for the first time this season off a feed from true freshman
Nathaniel Webber.
Just 30 seconds later, long-stick midfielder
Adam Dobis went nearly the length of the field and netted his first goal of the year to draw the game level at 3-3.
UIndy grabbed its first lead of the game a little more than five minutes into the third quarter, when sophomore
Parker Kump scored his 13th goal of the season.
Kump scored again barely one minute later, extending the Greyhound lead up to 5-3.
Wheeling Jesuit's Matt Lee potted a goal in the final minutes of the quarter, setting up a 5-4 edge for UIndy heading to the final period.
There, UIndy outscored Wheeling Jesuit 3-2 to fend off any comeback attempt and secure its second home win of the season.
Sophomore
Matthew Johnson and freshman
Parker Johnson each tallied goals in the period, and Kump all but sealed the victory with an open-net goal to complete his hat trick.
The Greyhound defense buckled down after the opening quarter, limiting the Cardinals to just three goals in the final 45 minutes of action. Sophomore goalie
Jarod Kimble totaled seven saves in the win.
UIndy put 20 shots on goal to Wheeling Jesuit's 13, and also finished with 10 more ground balls. Individually, junior
Max Groves paced the Hounds with four ground balls, while Kump,
Jarod Kimble and junior
Kenny Keyes each had three.
Dobis put together a complete performance in the Hounds' victory, finishing with two caused turnovers and as many ground balls to go with his goal.
UIndy is on the road against nationally-ranked opponents for its next two games, beginning next Saturday, Mar. 25, at 1 p.m. ET against No. 17 Lake Erie. The Hounds then meet fourth-ranked Lindenwood Apr. 1 at 1 p.m.
