Hounds notch two wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The  No. 19 UIndy softball team upped its winning streak to five with a pair of wins Saturday at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Greyhounds (12-4) shutout Fairmont State, 1-0, before downing Concord, 7-4.

UIndy 1, Fairmont 0
Freshman pitchers Crystal Sicard and Lauren Honkomp combined for a three-hit shutout versus the Falcons. Sicard started with 5 1/3 scoreless frames to garner the win, while Honkomp got the final four outs to collect her first career save.

The Hounds' lone run came in the second when Cathy Skaggs plated Taylor Podschweit with a two-out single.

Skaggs and Natalie Lalich both finished 2-for-3 at the plate, with Podschweit and Rachel Vander Wagon adding a single apiece.

UIndy 7, Concord 4
UInyd scored in just one inning in game two, but it was a big one. The Hounds sent 13 batters to the plate in a frame that included two separate rallies. A Katie Kelly walk and consecutive singles from Jessie Noone and Dani Turner started the inning before Natalie Lalich cleaned things up with a three-run bomb – her second homer of the trip.

With the bases now empty, the Mountain Lions got two straight outs and appeared to nearly get out of the jam. However, the next six Greyhounds reached base and three more crossed, extending the inning and proving too much for Concord to overcome. The final three RBIs came on an RBI single by Kelly and back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Noone and Turner.

Down 7-1 late in the game, the Lions scored one in the sixth before mounting a potential comeback rally in the seventh. They plated two and had one on with just one out, but UIndy pitcher Lauren Honkomp ended the threat by inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. Honkomp got the complete-game win after allowing nine hits and zero walks. Only three of her four charged runs were earned.

The Spring Games continue tomorrow when the Greyhounds take on Bemidji State at 1 p.m. and Philadelphia University at 3:30 p.m.
