FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Senior
Arklon Huertas del Pino picked up a signature victory Saturday, but seventh-ranked Barry University bested the No. 29 UIndy tennis squad, winning 7-2 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds fall to 5-4 overall this season, wrapping up their spring break trip to Florida with a 1-2 overall record against a handful of the NCAA's best programs.
Huertas del Pino's 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) marathon win in No. 1 singles was one of the highlights for the Hounds Saturday, as the Greyhound senior defeated Barry senior Ahmed Triki, the second-ranked singles player in Division II. It was just Triki's sixth defeat in his illustrious career with the Bucs.
For his efforts, Huertas del Pino improved to 12-1 overall and a remarkable 9-0 in No. 1 singles matches, which includes three wins against nationally-ranked opposition.
The other UIndy point came in No. 3 singles, where junior
Nils Hoffacker defeated Pierre Montrieul in a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) victory. He moved to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the No. 3 singles slot, winning his second against a regionally-ranked foe.
Barry, the 2015 NCAA Division II champions, gained control of the match by winning three hard-fought doubles bouts.
In singles, the Bucs won the first five completed contests in straight sets to clinch the overall victory and take a commanding 7-0 advantage before Huertas del Pino and Hoffacker put UIndy on the board.
The Hounds are off until next Saturday, Mar. 25, when they face 25th-ranked Grand Valley State at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Ind.
