Two dramatic finishes gives Greyhounds mid-week sweep of Ohio Dominican

INDIANAPOLIS – Thanks to some late game heroics, the No. 22-ranked UIndy baseball team closed out a five-game homestand with two dramatic wins over Ohio Dominican on Wednesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (14-5) rallied from down two runs in the final inning to force extras and earn a 6-5 win in the opener. In game two, Ohio Dominican (9-8) had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh, but weren't able to push a run across as the Hounds held on for a 4-3 win.

GAME ONE: #22 UIndy 6 – Ohio Dominican 5 (8 inn.)

Both teams went scoreless over the opening two innings before UIndy came through in the bottom of the third. Jake Perreira, Storm Joop and Brendan Dudas all drew walks to load the bases for Dylan Jones. The UIndy DH slapped a grounder through the left side that deflected off the shortstop and past two outfielders, allowing all three runners to score and make it 3-0 Hounds.

Ohio Dominican answered with one run in the fourth off UIndy starter Pete Allen and took the lead on a three-run bomb by Justin Childers in the fifth. Another Panther run in the sixth put the Greyhounds in a 5-3 hole heading into their final at-bat.

Kyle Orloff and Nick Miller both reached to start the inning and wound up in scoring position with no outs. Will Smithey cut the lead to on with his first career RBI on a sac fly and Miller tied the game at five later in the inning when he scored on a wild pitch.

The Hounds completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth when pinch runner Hunter Waning scored on a Blake Richardson ground ball that squeaked through a Panther fielder's legs an in for the winning play.

Dylan Stutsman (1-0) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless eighth inning. Making his first start of the year, Allen lasted four innings, giving up one earned run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: #22 UIndy 4 – Ohio Dominican 3

After falling behind in the top of the first, the Greyhounds wasted no time taking their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in their first trip to the plate. Joop led off with a double and scored later in the frame on an RBI groundout by Dudas. With two down, back-to-back triples from Holdsworth and Richardson gave the Greyhounds the early 2-1 lead.

Joop made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the second and Smithey collected his second RBI of the day on his first career hit, bringing home Holdsworth with a double in the third.

Silent for much of game two, the Panther offense closed the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth. ODU put together a threat in the seventh with a single and double off Stutsman to lead off the inning.

After inducing a fly out to shallow left for the first out, Lee Sponseller was intentionally walked to load the bases. With no room for error, the Greyhounds' junior closer executed his pitches flawlessly, ending the game with a strikeout and a line out to earn his sixth save of the year.

Connor Mailloux matched a career-high with six strikeouts in three innings of work to start the game. Christian Beard (1-0) notched his first career win with a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Mailloux.

Winners of three straight, the Hounds head out on the road for the GLVC openers this weekend. Standing in the Hounds' way is the only other ranked team in the league, the No. 18-ranked Pumas of St. Joseph's College.

The two long-time conference foes are slated to open the weekend series on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Rensselaer, Ind.
