LIBERTY, Mo. – The No. 10 UIndy softball team had its 11-game winning streak halted Saturday, splitting a doubleheader at William Jewell. After shutting out the host Cardinals 11-0 in game one, the Greyhounds (24-6, 5-1) fell, 6-3, in the capper to drop their first GLVC contest of the year.
Â
UIndy 11, WJC 0 (5 inn.)
UIndy took control early with a four-run second inning. The first five Hounds reached base, starting with a leadoff walk by
Natalie Lalich.
Tayler Weck followed with a double before three straight singles added gasoline to the fire.
Taylor Podschweit,
Cathy Skaggs,
Lauren Honkomp and
Katie Kelly each had an RBI in the frame.
Â
The final straw came in the fifth when
Dani Turner delivered her first grand slam as a Greyhound, with her two-out salami upping the lead to 11.
Â
Though she had two singles and two ribbies at the plate, Honkomp was most effective in the circle, tossing four scoreless innings to up her record to a stellar 16-1. She fanned seven while allowing just four hits and walking none.
Â
Fellow-freshman
Lindsey Bowers came on to get the final three outs, throwing a perfect fifth to complete the shutout.
Â
WJC 6, UIndy 3
The Cardinals (11-13, 3-3) responded with a 6-3 win in game two. They broke through with a big second inning, scoring five runs on just three hits to chase UIndy starter
Crystal Sicard (8-4) after 1 1/3 innings.
Â
After scoring a single run in the fourth, the Hounds crept within two with a pair of runs in the fifth – both coming on a Lalich single. However, Jewell tacked on an insurance tally in the fifth and hung on to snap UIndy's winning streak.
Â
The Greyhounds will remain in the Kansas City area as they head across town to face the Hawks of Rockhurst University tomorrow. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
