Softball ends weekend with split at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 10h-ranked UIndy softball team split a doubleheader at Rockhurst Sunday, downing the host Hawks 3-1 before falling, 1-0. The Greyhounds move to 27-5 on the year, including a 6-2 mark in conference play.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh and final inning, the Greyhounds came through in the clutch, starting the frame with four consecutive singles to push across the game winner. After Cathy Skaggs and Summer Collins reached, junior Julia Liceaga tied it with an RBI knock, and senior Katie Kelly followed with the decisive blow – a two-run single to left.

The Hawks' run came in the second on a solo home run from Lauren Marks. It marked the only run allowed by UIndy starter Lauren Honkomp (17-1), who won her 17th straight decision by surrendering just two hits and striking out seven.

Dani Turner, who finished 2 for 4, had the Hounds' only extra-base hit with a sixth-inning double.

The Hounds endured just their second shutout of the season, falling in a 1-0 final in game two. With the contest still scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks (17-15, 6-2 GLVC) plated the lone run without the help of a hit. A leadoff walk, a passed ball, a wild pitch and a sac fly conspired to score an unearned tally that ultimately held up as the game winner.

The Hawk's All-GLVC pitcher Bridgette Sappington got the win, tossing a three-hitter while striking out six and walking zero.

Freshman Crystal Sicard (8-5) was the tough-luck loser. After pitching four scoreless innings, she walked the leadoff batter in the fifth and was pulled in favor of Honkomp, who ultimately allowed the runner to score.

Offensively, senior Tayler Weck accounted for two of the Hounds' three hits with a pair of sing

UIndy will remain on the road next weekend, starting with a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. ET.
