ST. LOUIS – UIndy men's lacrosse turned in a huge second half to defeat the Maryville Saints on the road Saturday, 16-3, picking up their first victory of the campaign.
Scoring 10 unanswered goals in total, the Greyhounds (1-2) outscored their hosts 9-0 in the second half to set a program standard with a 13-goal final margin. The Saints, playing in their inaugural season, fell to 0-4.
"For the most part, I thought everybody came out focused and did their part to get this win today," Head Coach
Greg Stocks said afterward. "It's always nice to get the first win under our belt, we've got to try and keep it going Monday against Ohio Valley."
Specialist
Dominic Guarino won 20 of 22 faceoffs, leading to his program-record 18 ground balls. He also scored the Hounds' first goal merely seconds into the game after winning the initial faceoff.
UIndy sophomore
Shawn Kimble took over from there, recording a hat trick in roughly three minutes to help the Hounds grab an early 4-1 lead.
Maryville traded goals with the Hounds over the remainder of the first quarter and most of the second, and went into the half down just 7-3.
UIndy dialed up the pressure in the second half, though, scoring nine straight across the third and fourth periods to coast to a lopsided decision.
Shawn Kimble led the way with six points on five goals, and junior-transfer
Sam Horning added four scores.
Freshman
Parker Johnson netted a pair of goals, bringing him even with Horning for the team high this season (six).
Sophomore
Parker Kump totaled four points, finishing with a personal-best three assists, and classmate
Jack Gentry tallied his first collegiate goal with a late-game score.
Others finishing with points for the Greyhounds were sophomores
Matthew Johnson (one goal, one assist),
Eric Lounds (one goal) and
Luke Allen (one assist).
Junior-transfer
Max Groves led UIndy defensively with three caused turnovers.
Keeper
Jarod Kimble finished with eight saves, recording a 72.7 save percentage.
The Greyhounds take just one day off before returning to action, hosting Ohio Valley at Key Stadium Monday at 4 p.m. ET.
