Bearcats edge Greyhounds in GLIAC showdown

INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy women's lacrosse suffered a nail-biter of a defeat Saturday at Key Stadium, falling to the visiting McKendree Bearcats by a 12-10 score in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meeting.

After see-sawing back and forth throughout the second half, McKendree (8-4, 4-0 GLIAC) eventually had the final say, breaking a 10-10 draw with a pair of late goals. UIndy falls to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in conference action with the loss.

The Hounds had to battle from behind early in Saturday's contest. Despite chewing nearly seven minutes off the clock with their first possession, the Hounds surrendered three quick goals from the Bearcats to fall into a 3-0 hole.

UIndy would rally, as its deliberate offensive scheme eventually led to four unanswered goals and the hosts' first lead of the afternoon.

Senior Chalane Morrison put the Hounds on the board with a marker roughly halfway through the period, and added another just minutes later to bring it to 3-2.

Freshman Grace Gunneson evened things up with a free position goal near the eight-minute point, and sophomore Sarah Konecny followed with one of her own to give UIndy its first advantage.

The visiting Bearcats responded, however, tallying two more goals before the halftime horn to carry a 5-4 edge into the break.

After a McKendree goal just 12 seconds into the half, UIndy took advantage of a trio of yellow cards to climb back into the game.

Gunneson and Morrison scored consecutive man-up free position goals, bringing the match level at 6-6. It would be the first of five ties throughout the second period.

From there, the two GLIAC foes ping-ponged back and forth down the stretch. The Hounds never managed to take the lead, however, as each game-tying score was countered with a quick response from the Bearcats.

When McKendree's Hannah Sugarman potted a free position goal at the two-minute mark, making it 11-10, the Hounds finally ran out of answers. A late insurance score from the Bearcats sealed the 12-10 victory.

Gunneson had a monster game for the Hounds, scoring a career-high five goals on eight total shots. Morrison was equally effective in attack, recording six points with four goals and a pair of assists.

Senior Anna Rulapaugh chipped in two assists and led the Hounds with two ground balls, as well.

Freshman Riley McClure led UIndy with three caused turnovers, and added three draw controls. Morrison led UIndy with four draw controls.

Sophomore Lauren Granville played all 60 minutes in-goal for the Hounds, recording six saves.

UIndy hits the road for its next two games, beginning with a non-conference meeting at Concordia-St. Paul next Friday, April 21, at 6 p.m. ET.
