ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – For the first time this year, the No. 12-ranked University of Indianapolis baseball team walked out of a Sunday double-header with a sweep.
Â
The Greyhounds (20-9, 5-3 GLVC) never trailed in either of their two wins over Lewis (6-20, 2-6 GLVC). In both games, the Hounds put a crooked number on the board in the top of the first and never looked back. The win also puts UIndy at the 20-win mark for the 22
nd consecutive season.
Â
Kyle Orloff had three hits and drove in four runs.
Nick Miller also had a trio of hits with three runs driven in and
Brendan Dudas hit his second career home run and drove in three in game two.
Â
GAME ONE: UIndy 7 – Lewis 2
UIndy drew first blood just five batters into game one. Each of the first three Greyhounds reached base to open the game and UIndy got on the board when Orloff drew a bases loaded walk. Miller followed up with a two-run double to left and Will Smithy tacked on another with an RBI ground out to make it 4-0 after one.
Â
Orloff plated another run with an RBI single in the third while
Conor White and
Storm Joop added some insurance runs in the sixth with a pair of RBI doubles.
Â
The seven runs proved to be more than enough support for starter
Jake Sprinkle (3-0), who tossed a season-high six innings while scattering six hits and striking out four.
Tyler Hosto worked a perfect seventh in a non-save situation.
Â
GAME TWO: UIndy 8 – Lewis 6
With two outs in the top of the first, Orloff cashed in on another UIndy scoring opportunity with a two-run double to deep center field. The sophomore slugger came in to score one batter later when Miller ripped a single back up the middle to make it 3-0.
Â
Lewis cut into the lead with a run in the first and another in the third before running into more trouble in the fourth. With White on following a one-out walk, Dudas belted a towering fly ball over the left field wall for a two-run blast. Later in the inning,
Blake Richardson tacked on to the lead with an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 6-2 game.
Â
Leading 6-4 with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, the Hounds caught a break when a Lewis error led to two runs and another four-run lead. It proved to be two big runs as the Flyers scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Flyers brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but their rally was shut down by
Chris Boettcher.
Â
Brian Wichman made the start and worked three solid innings before turning things over to
Reid Werner (4-1), who matched Wichman with three innings of two-hit ball to earn the win. Boettcher notched his third save of the year and second in as many days.
Â
Next up for the Greyhounds is a trip to St. Louis, Mo. on Tuesday (Apr. 4) afternoon for one game against the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons. Â First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. eastern time.
