GREENSBURG, Pa. – For the second week in a row the Greyhound men's lacrosse team fell just shy in a battle against a nationally-ranked opponent on the road, falling 11-9 at No. 11 Seton Hill Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
Coming off a close two-goal defeat at seventh-ranked Mercyhurst – and facing its third ranked opponent in four games – UIndy (6-5) went toe-to-toe with the Griffins (8-4) before the home side pulled away late.
The Hounds were on the board first, however, as sophomore
Parker Kump scored on a
Matthew Johnson assist just 80 seconds into the game.
Seton Hill would quickly answer, netting a pair of goals over a 60-second stretch to take its first lead of the game, 2-1.
Kump brought the Hounds level later in the quarter, scoring a man-up goal on an assist by freshman
Parker Johnson.
The Griffins would add a tally before the period ended, carrying a 3-2 edge into the second quarter.
Seton Hill outscored UIndy across the next 15 minutes, 4-3. The Greyhounds stayed within striking distance with goals from sophomore
Shawn Kimble,
Matthew Johnson and a hat trick marker from Kump.
UIndy fell down by three goals early in the third quarter, but junior
Sam Horning brought the Hounds back with consecutive scores before the period ended. His first came off a feed by
Parker Johnson, and the next was a man-up opportunity from sophomore
Kevin Spurlock's helper.
After a fourth-quarter score from the Griffins, the Hounds pulled within one late, getting a goal from
Parker Johnson off an assist by junior
Max Groves.
But that was as close as they would get, as the Griffins took advantage of three Greyhound turnovers and scored twice to pull away down the stretch.
Kump added a late tally to finish with four goals on seven shots, chipping in three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Parker Johnson and
Matthew Johnson each finished with three points (one goal, two assists).
Groves led the Hounds with six ground balls, and classmates
Kenny Keyes and
Jake Wittmeyer each had three. Sophomore
Dominic Guarino won 12 of 22 faceoffs for UIndy.
UIndy and Seton Hill finished with nearly identical team statistics in shots (33 to 36), ground balls (34 to 35), saves (14 to 13) and faceoffs (12 each), but the Hounds cleared just 13 of 20 attempts and committed 19 turnovers.
Sophomore keeper
Jarod Kimble racked up 14 saves in-goal, one away from his season high.
The Greyhounds return to Key Stadium for their home finale next Saturday, April 29, hosting Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m. ET. They will wrap up the regular season against top-ranked Limestone in Gaffney, S.C.
