Hounds drop two one-run contests at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UIndy baseball team dropped a pair of heartbreakers on Sunday afternoon, falling to East Division rival Bellarmine by scores of 4-3 and 3-2.

The Greyhounds (25-17, 9-11 GLVC) saw their skid hit five games overall while the Knights (27-15, 14-6 GLVC) extended their winning streak to five. Storm Joop and Kyle Orloff had three hits each for the Greyhounds, but the Hounds left a combined 15 runners on base on Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Bellarmine 4 – UIndy 3 (8 inn.)
Bellarmine plated the first run of the day in their first trip to the plate but UIndy avoided more trouble when the Knights left the bases loaded. The Hounds drew even in the top of the second thanks to a two-out single from Will Smithey that brought Ryan Wood home from second.

The Knights re-took the lead with another run in the second and after leaving the bases loaded in the third, UIndy drew even in the fourth thanks to a two-out RBI double from Joop. Two innings later, Joop put the Greyhounds in front with an RBI single, bringing Nick Miller home to make it a 3-2 game.

That lead was short-lived as the Knights evened things up in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Alex Phillips. The game would head to extras where the Knights were able to walk it off with a two-out RBI double from Josh Finerty in the eighth.

Dylan Stutsman (1-1) took his first loss of the year after giving up five hits over 2 2/3 innings. Jake Sprinkle made the start for UIndy and worked 4 1/3 innings of six-hit ball, walking four and striking out two.

GAME TWO: Bellarmine 3 – UIndy 2
For the second straight game, the Knights got the early jump on the Greyhounds, scoring twice in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double from Griffin Neuer and a run coming in to score on the Hounds' only error of the day.

Down 3-0 heading into the third, the Hounds loaded the bases with a pair of infield singles and a walk coming with two outs. Unfortunately, UIndy came up empty handed after Phillips forced Dylan Jones to pop out to the catcher, ending the threat.

After going down quietly in each of the next two innings, the Greyhounds got on the board in the top of the sixth. Macy Holdsworth led off the inning with a double and came in to score on Jones' RBI ground out later in the inning. Orloff followed that up with a triple to right center and an errant throw enable him to score to cut the deficit to one.

Joop would reach on a two-out walk in the final inning and advance to second on a balk. That's where the Hounds' rally would end as Blake Richardson grounded out to short to end the game.

Jake Shaw (4-4) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits over four innings. Phillips (4-0) scattered six hits and struck out six in a complete game effort for the Knights.

The Greyhounds will play their final regular season road series next weekend, traveling to Evansville, Ind. for a four-game set against GLVC East-leading Southern Indiana. The series gets underway with two games on Saturday (Apr. 29). First pitch is set for noon.
