UIndy splits with Saints on Senior Day

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy softball team and visiting Maryville traded shutouts Sunday, with the Greyhounds taking game one, 1-0, and the Saints answering with a 3-0 win in game two. Prior to the first pitch, UIndy recognized senior student-athletes Katie Kelly, Natalie Lalich, Dani Turner and Tayler Weck during the program's annual Senior Day festivities.

The quartet has now helped the team to a 174-50 (.777) record the past four years, a span that includes eight NCAA Tournament wins, a GLVC championship last season and a regional title in 2015.

UIndy 1, Maryville 0
After the seniors' time in the spotlight, it was a pair of freshmen that delivered in the opening game. Rookie hurler Lauren Honkomp fired a complete-game shutout in the circle, while producing an RBI groundout at the plate to score the game's only run in the second inning. The ground ball to short scored fellow-freshman Cathy Skaggs, who had just recorded her team-best third triple of the season.

Honkomp (21-8) garnered her first pitching win in her last eight decisions. The performance, good for her third shutout of the year, included five strikeouts and only one walk. No Saint base runner touched second base after the first inning.

Kelly and Turner had a single apiece, with the latter adding a stolen base. Jessie Noone's first-inning double was the game's lone extra-base hit.

Maryville 3, UIndy 0
The Saints (22-24, 12-14) turned the tables in the capper, holding the Hounds off the board in a 3-0 win. They piled up four doubles in the fourth inning to score all three of their runs in a single frame.

Though she did not allow a hit in the first three innings, freshman starter Crystal Sicard gave up three of the aforementioned two-baggers and was charged with all three tallies. She took the loss to move to 10-7 on the year.

Maryville's Nikki Taylor (13-9) pitched a three-hitter, with Noone (double), Skaggs (single) and Honkomp (single) accounting for the Hounds' only knocks.

UIndy will host its final doubleheader of the season tomorrow when rival Missouri-St. Louis comes to Baumgartner Field for a noon Eastern start. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, but the contrasting forecasts forced the move to Monday.
