LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 14 UIndy softball team (29-11, 10-6 GLVC) had a tough day on the diamond at Bellarmine Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against the host Knights, 2-1 and 5-0, respectively. The final scores paled in comparison to a greater good, however, as the competitors were
two of 44 softball teams from across the nation to wear specially-ordered jerseys in support of UIndy head coach
Melissa Frost and her battle with breast cancer.

"I'm humbled and honored at the out pouring of love and support today." Frost said afterwards. "It's amazing to have an army of people behind me and fighting this journey with me. I'm so thankful for the softball community and would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all those that participated. I would like to thank my assistant
Sara Kubuske and Renee Hicks (Bellarmine head coach) from the bottom of my heart for the countless hours of planning and organizing for this event. Thank you to Bellarmine University for not only hosting this event but for the awesome day that I will be forever thankful for. For as long as I've been at UIndy, we've always played every Sunday in honor of the people fighting and the survivors of breast cancer. Now it takes on a whole new meaning."
Bellarmine 2, UIndy 1 (8 inn.)
The teams fought to a scoreless tie through five innings before the Greyhounds finally broke the seal in the top of the sixth. With one out and no one on, sophomore third baseman
Taylor Podschweit connected on her fifth home run of the season, staking to Hounds to a 1-0 edge.
Â
The lead was short lived, however, as the Knights (17-23, 5-11) answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to knot it at 1-1.
Â
There the score would stay through regulation before Bellarmine pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. The deciding hit came in the form of an RBI double by freshman Paige Dadney, plating pinch-runner Allison Woosley with what was scored an unearned tally.
Â
Freshman Sabrina Fussenegger got the pitching win for the Knights after allowing just three hits and striking out seven. UIndy freshman
Lauren Honkomp also pitched a complete game but earned the loss with a line of seven hits, one walk, seven Ks and two runs (one earned) allowed.
Â
Senior
Katie Kelly added a pair of singles, a walk and a stolen base offensively.
Â
Bellarmine 5, UIndy 0
Fussenegger (9-11) got the ball again in game two and was even better. The hometown product spun a two-hit shutout for her ninth win of the season.
Â
Less a sac bunt from Julie Liceaga,
Jessie Noone's double and base on balls and
Dani Turner's single accounted for the entirety of UIndy's offensive production.
Â
Honkomp (20-4) was again tagged for the loss. She relieved fellow-freshman
Crystal Sicard with two down in the second inning, successfully escaping a two-on, two-out jam, but later surrendered a fatal three-run homer to senior Olivia Russell in the third.
Â
The Greyhounds return the Baumgartner Field tomorrow to host fellow GLVC-powerhouse and 10th-ranked Southern Indiana. First pitch of the marquee match-up is set for noon ET. Live stats and video will be available
