INDIANAPOLIS – The 14th-ranked UIndy softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday at Baumgartner Field against the 10th-ranked Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.
UIndy falls to 29-13 overall 10-8 in GLVC action with the losses, while USI improved to 34-8 (13-5).
Senior
Dani Turner and junior
Jessie Noone each smacked solo homers in game two, but that was all the Greyhounds could manage at the plate, as the USI duo of Jenifern Leonhardt and reliever Caitlyn Bradley allowed just eight hits and two runs combined.
USI 4, UIndy 0
Sunday's opener began as a pitching duel between the Hounds'
Lauren Honkomp and Southern Indiana's Leonhardt, the teams' freshmen aces.
The two tossed four scoreless innings before the Eagles were finally able to do some damage against Honkomp. Lexi Reese's RBI single brought home Claire Johnson for the game's first run.
USI scored three more in the sixth – one unearned – with the biggest hit coming from Olivia Clark-Kittleson's two-RBI single up the middle.
That was plenty for Leonhardt, who fanned 10 UIndy batters and surrendered just two hits in a complete-game shutout.
After winning 20 straight decisions, Honkomp was saddled with her fifth loss of the season and third in a row.
USI 5, UIndy 2
Turner provided early offense for the Hounds in game two, smoking her 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the first for UIndy's first run of the day.
USI answered the following frame, however, as Caitlyn Bradley took UIndy starter Jamie Rhodes yard for a 3-run homer.
???????Noone, who was batting leadoff for the first time in her career, helped cut into the deficit with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth after battling through nearly a dozen pitches from Leonhardt.
Later in the frame, Turner chased Leonhardt with a double deep to centerfield, but USI's reliever, Bradley, proved just as staunch in the circle.
She tossed two and a third spotless innings, slamming the door on UIndy's comeback bid. The Eagles would add two unearned insurance runs in the seventh for good measure.
The Hounds look to snap their four-game skid next Friday, hosting GLVC foe McKendree for a doubleheader at Baumgartner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.Â
