Hounds, Bearcats split offensively-charged doubleheader

INDIANAPOLIS – There was offense aplenty on display at Greyhound Park on Sunday afternoon as the No. 10-ranked UIndy baseball team and the McKendree Bearcats slugged their way to a split in a pair of high-scoring affairs.

In the opener, the Greyhounds (23-10, 8-4 GLVC) put the game out of reach early, pounding out 18 hits on their way to a 16-4 win. In game two, the roles were reversed as McKendree (10-21, 1-11 GLVC) used an 11-run first inning to set the tone. The Bearcats recorded 27 hits in the game for a 28-5 win, avoiding a sweep in the process.

Sluggers Kyle Orloff and Dylan Jones both went deep and drove in six runs for the Greyhounds on the day. Junior Storm Joop recorded his first career multi-homer game with a pair of solo shots in game one.

GAME ONE: UIndy 16 – McKendree 4
With the wind howling out to left field, Joop took the third pitch he saw and launched it into the jet stream for the first run of the game. Orloff's sac fly and Will Smithey's RBI single put the Hounds up 3-0 after one.

The second inning brought more runs for UIndy, starting with a one-out RBI single from Macy Holdsworth. Two batters later, Orloff added to the lead with a towering three-run shot, his second of the year and a 7-2 UIndy lead.

One inning later, the lead reached double figures as UIndy plated five more in the third. Orloff and Blake Richardson recorded RBIs and the Hounds took advantage of two McKendree errors to score an additional three runs in the frame. UIndy added three more runs in the fifth and their final run of the opener in the sixth on Joop's second long ball of the day.

Richardson went 4-for-4 with three runs scored in the opener while Orloff was 2-for-2 with six RBI in the opener. Joop scored four times to go along with his two long balls.

Jake Sprinkle (4-0) was effective on the mound while holding on to the lead. The sophomore allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over four innings of work.

GAME TWO: McKendree 28 – UIndy 5
After their first batter of game two was retired, the Bearcats took out their frustrations on three Greyhound pitchers to score 11 runs on nine hits in the top of the first. McKendree continued to square up UIndy pitching, adding eight runs in the second to emphatically put the game out of reach.

When the dust settled, the Bearcats became the first team to hang 20-plus runs on UIndy since Eastern Illinois did so back on Apr. 21, 1998.

Jones put the Hounds on the board with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth, one of two hits in game two for the Avon, Ind.-native. Lawan Rollins had an RBI single in the seventh and Hunter Waning plated the first two runs of his career with a double to deep center later in the inning.

UIndy starter Pete Allen (1-1) gave up three earned runs on six hits in just 2/3 of an inning of work. McKendree starter Ryan Cates (2-0) pitched well with the lead, giving up two runs on four hits over six innings of work.

The Greyhounds will step out of conference play for a nine-inning game on Tuesday at Findlay. First pitch for the regional showdown is set for 2:00 p.m.
