Hounds drop final road twin bill of the year at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After rain washed out their games on Sunday, UIndy and Southern Indiana made up the double-header on Monday with two games at the USI Baseball Field.

UIndy's struggles continued on Monday as the Screaming Eagles extended UIndy's slide to nine games in a row. The hosts downed the Greyhounds 5-0 in game one and 15-10 in the night cap.

The losses drop UIndy to 25-21 on the year and 9-15 in the GLVC. USI keeps their lead in the division by one game, moving to 29-16 overall and 19-5 in league play.

GAME ONE: Southern Indiana 5 – UIndy 0
The Hounds had a golden opportunity to get on the board in the top of the first. With one out, Macy Holdsworth reached on an error and advanced to third one batter later on a double from Kyle Orloff. That was as close as the Hounds would come to scoring in game one as the next two batters struck out to end the threat.

USI capitalized in the bottom of the inning with three runs on three hits and added another run an inning later. The hosts added an unearned run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Kyle Griffin (5-3) frustrated the UIndy offense all game, tossing a complete game three-hitter. Michael Schalasky (4-3) made the start and lasted one inning plus, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Jake Shaw was strong in relief for the Hounds, allowing just one hit over the final five innings.

GAME TWO: Southern Indiana 15 – UIndy 10
Once again, the Screaming Eagles seized the early advantage. After back-to-back UIndy errors that would have ended the inning, Drake McNamara made the Hounds pay with a two-run double into right. McNamara struck again in the third with a two-run shot that made it 5-0 USI.

UIndy got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-run single from Orloff and a run-scoring ground out from Nick Miller to cut the deficit to 5-3.

But USI would add to their lead with another run in the fourth and seven more in the fifth.

Hunter Waning cut into the Screaming Eagles lead with a two-run double in sixth and a three-run home run in the eighth, the first career round-tripper for the redshirt freshman. Ryan Wood doubled in a run in the ninth and Waning collected his sixth RBI of the day later in the inning after drawing a bases loaded walk.

Waning and Storm Joop had two hits each to lead the Greyhounds. On the mound, Brian Wichman (1-3) allowed six earned runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. Austin Krizan (4-1) picked up the win after tossing six innings of six-hit ball.

UIndy returns home to open their final series of the regular season on Friday afternoon against Illinois Springfield. First pitch for Friday's double header is set for noon at Greyhound Park.
