Hounds fall as Knights pull away late

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team (6-14, 3-7 GLVC) wrapped up a four-game homestand Thursday night with a 75-59 loss to Bellarmine (11-8, 6-4) at Nicoson Hall. The visiting Knights finished the game on a 15-0 run to earn the win. Senior Martha Burse poured in a game-high 29 points for the Greyhounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Though they never led on the night, the Hounds found themselves within a single point midway through the final quarter. A three-point play from senior Devin Ferguson and back-to-back lay-ups from Burse accounted for a 7-0 run that made 60-59 Knights with 4:39 to go.

UIndy went cold from that point, however, as the home team would not score a bucket the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Bellarmine horded the game's final 15 points to pull away. The Knights went 4 for 5 from the field down the stretch while hitting all six free throw attempts over the final three-plus minutes.

Burse was a workhorse for UIndy, shooting 11 for 21 (.524) from the floor while adding six rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Freshman Taylor Drury put up 16 points while knocking down a collegiate-best 4 of 6 shots from distance. Ferguson added 13 points and a pair of dimes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Burse, Drury and Ferguson combined for all but one of the Hounds' total points.
- Junior Erin Wood grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, but the Hounds were ultimately out-rebounded 46-30 overall.
- Drury hit her fourth 3-pointer late in the third quarter to knot it at 48 apiece, the last of three ties on the night.
- The already-short UIndy bench was even shorter Thursday as junior guard Alexa Bailey sat due to injury.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Kristin Wodrich on the rebounding effort…
"We didn't box out. That's the story of the game. We gave them a lot of second-chance points. I thought our kids fought the whole game, which is really nice, but when you give up 18 offensive boards, that makes it tough. We just have to go back to the video and keep getting better."

NEXT TIME OUT
The Greyhounds return to the road Saturday for a matinee at Illinois Springfield. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
