CHARLOTTE, NC –
The UIndy swimming teams packed up their vans and traveled to Charlotte, N.C., for what could arguably be the fastest Division II regular season meet of the year Saturday. With the women awaiting their meet on Sunday, the Greyhound men took down two of the powerhouses in Division II, besting Wingate, who placed seventh at nationals last March, as well as the four-time defending-national-champions Queens University. The meet was formatted in short-course meters, not the usual short-course yards, with the Hounds besting Wingate, 183-79, while toppling Queens, 148-114.
The Hounds started off the day as hot as can be, winning the first five events of the meet. In the 400 medley relay, the squad of
Rodrigo Codo Berti,
Jan Zuchowicz,
Ante Lucev and
Guilherme Zavaneli won on a time of 3:44.03, out-touching Queens by .49 seconds. Sophomore
Cody Liske stepped up next for the Hounds and took over the 800 free, as his 8:21.84 turned into a four-second victory. The men's 200 free proved to be an astounding race, as the senior duo of Zavaneli (1:52.06) and
Vitor Botana (1:55.53) took first and second place in the event, respectively. Berti also picked up his second win immediately following, winning the 100 back on a time of :55.47 – two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
One of the best races of the day for the Greyhounds came in their fifth victory – the 100 breast. In terrific fashion, Zuchowicz took the victory on his 1:03.45 time. Right behind him was one of the Greyhounds' many outstanding freshmen,
Antonio Milin, who placed second on a 1:03.73. A half-second behind Milin stood the junior
TJ LeSeure at third place, posting a solid time of 1:03.87. Rounding out the Greyhounds was senior
Lucian Conner, where he gained an impressive fifth-place finish on a time of 1:04.01.
Despite the win streak ending, that couldn't stop the Greyhounds from having impressive races. Sophomore
Brady Stabler stepped up in the 200 Fly, touching the wall at a 2:06.57 for a second-place finish in the event. The 50 free provided three more Hounds in the top five, including
Victor Antonon's second-place finish at :23.48, Lucev touching third on his :23.5, and
Chris Gurski placing fifth on a :24.05.
The wins continued to pile up after the 100 free, as Zavaneli took a third victory on the day with a time of :50.16. The 200 back also proved to be a stellar race, as Berti tagged another victory on his 2:02.19 swim. Although the Hounds couldn't pull another victory in the 200 breast, Conner led the Greyhounds on his second-place finish at 2:21.62. Freshman
Raiden Finchum took the fifth-place slot on a 2:24.86 in the event.
If you guessed that the Greyhounds posted both a first and second place finish in the 400 free, you would be correct. Reigning GLVC Athlete of the Week
Adam Rosipal took over the race, posting a 3:58.35 victory for the Hounds. Liske immediately followed with a great race of his own, throwing down a time of 4:03.4 in the event. The points kept coming for the Greyhounds in the 100 fly, as Lucev's :56.69 was good for second and Stabler's :57.04 provided a third-place finish.
In the last couple races of the day, the Greyhounds finished strong. Milin had a third-place finish of his own in the 200 IM, posting a 2:09.86. In the final event, the 200 free relay, the squad of Antonon, Zuchowicz, Lucev, and Zavaneli combined for a 1:32.96 time for a second-place finish on the day.
"We raced with our hearts and gave it all. It shows we are working in the right direction," explained Zavaneli.
Head coach
Jason Hite put it well when he said: "We swam inspired. The goal of this training trip was to come to Queens and race. This is an early season dual meet, but it's always fun to win. We will take this as a step in the right direction and keep pressing and keep progressing. The ultimate goal is in February and March."
The Greyhound women will look to continue the momentum on Sunday, as they will compete against both Queens and Wingate in their own meet to conclude the Fall Break season. That meet will also start at 10 a.m. ET.
