Greyhounds erase deficit to upend #14 Hawks

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team (15-8, 8-3 GLVC) overcame a 2-0 deficit on Friday night to defeat No. 14 Rockhurst in Ruth Lilly. The Greyhounds' home winning streak now stands at eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks cruised to an opening-set victory, hitting .346 as a team compared to the Hounds' .000. The Greyhounds had their chance in the second frame, attacking at a .394 clip as Katie Furlong totaled eight kills, but the Hawks' hit .462 against the home defense to take the 2-0 advantage.

Middles Katie Voelz and Lauren Koopman stepped up in the third set, each tallying a solo block to push the momentum to the Hounds' side. Taylor Jacquay stepped up in the frame, knocking down seven kills, while Furlong added five more to her total. Alyssa Spears dished out 17 assists on 21 UIndy kills in the fourth, which Furlong and Jacquay combined for 15 to force a fifth set.

The deciding frame looked to be all Greyhounds as the home team grabbed an early 6-1 lead. Rockhurst flirted with a comeback of its own in the set before Jacquay silenced the Hawks with a kill for the win.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Jason Reed: "This was a big win for our seniors. It's the first time we've beaten Rockhurst with Katie and Lauren with our program."

"We didn't play up to our level the first two sets and didn't bring the energy we usually bring at home. But we stepped up the final three sets and played lights out."

Sophomore Taylor Jacquay: "We've been working on creating a faster tempo and the first two sets, I struggled finding my groove. After that, Alyssa and I really clicked."

Sophomore Katie Furlong: "It's a big win for us going forward. This is now the third ranked team we've beaten this year; we know we can do it. We didn't give up after those first two sets and really found ourselves after that win in the third set."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will celebrate seniors Lauren Koopman and Katie Voelz tomorrow afternoon against William Jewell. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the ceremony taking place after the match.
