LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their final regular season before the GLVC tournament this weekend, the UIndy men's soccer team faced off against the hottest team in the GLVC, the Bellarmine Knights. The Knights, winners of five straight, were looking to upend the Hounds and take the conference's two seed heading into the tournament beginning this weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The night did not start off well for the Hounds, Bellarmine wasted hardly any time getting on the board. In just the game's third minute, the Knights sent a shot just past
Miles Palmer to take the early 1-0 lead. The Knights capitalized yet again in the 19th minute and sent a shot in the top right corner of the goal past Palmer for the 2-0 Bellarmine lead. After allowing the early Knights advantage, UIndy did not quit like they have not all season. On a cross in the 33rd minute,
Felix Oevermann took a pass from
James Jenkins to feed to
Alejandro Steinwascher who sent the ball into the goal to shrink the Greyhound deficit to just one.
The Hounds came out in the second half with confidence, they put pressure on the Knight defense late in the first half but still trailed by just one coming into the second.
Miles Palmer made a pair of critical saves in the 58th minute to keep the Knights lead to just one. UIndy's first shot on goal came in the 79th minute of the game, they made the most of it too.
Javier Steinwascher found
Vincent Stone and Stone sent a shot whistling past the Bellarmine keeper to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team could get a goal past the either late in the game and we headed to overtime.
There was only one shot on goal for both teams in the first overtime period. That one shot went to UIndy.
Javier Steinwascher had a look at a header in the 96th minute, forced the Bellarmine keeper to come up and make the save before we headed to the second overtime period. UIndy controlled the ball on their side of the field for the majority of the overtime period, with 52 seconds left in the game the game-winner was scored. Bellarmine got their first shot of the period and sent it in to end the game in the 109th minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-UIndy finished 2-1-1 in overtime games this year
-Bellarmine's seven shots on goal ties for the most shots on goal this season in a single game.
-Two goals in the first half tonight was only the second time this season the Greyhounds have allowed multiple goals in the first half of a game this season (Maryville).
HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on tonight's game and moving forward to the GLVC tournament, "we lost a couple cheap goals early tonight which is really tough to come back from on the road especially against a really good Bellarmine team. I thought our response was fantastic, the mentality of the guys was unbelievable, and we did fantastically well to get back into it. Looking at the stats, we had six shots in overtime and they had one, but they took it. That is what happens when you allow it to go to overtime. Hopefully for us it is a big lesson learned going into the conference tournament. Like every single year, a one seed, an eight seed, or anyone can win this conference tournament. At the end of the day we are fired up to be in it, we have done well historically in this tournament, and we expect nothing different this year."
