ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Coming off a pair of wins last week in GLVC play, the UIndy men's soccer team hit the road Friday afternoon for an early-afternoon tilt with Maryville. The Saints, winners of four straight, were looking to move ahead of the Hounds in the GLVC standings while the Hounds were looking to hang close to GLVC front-runner USI before Sunday's showdown. The Saints were able to extend their winning streak and end the Hounds in the 3-2 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy got off to a fast start, pushing the ball into Maryville territory early. The Greyhounds were able to keep the ball near scoring position often in the first 10 minutes of the game,
Benjamin Sierra was able to get a shot on target but unable to connect and score the game's first points. The Saints were able to get the ball away from the Hounds briefly, and made the most of the opportunity, when a shot ricocheted of the post and past
Miles Palmer to give Maryville the early 1-0 lead. UIndy quickly rebounded. Having not played trailing most of the year, the Hounds knew they did not need to panic this early. In the 30th minute,
Javier Steinwascher sent in the equalizer when he connected on a beautiful bicycle-kick to knot the game up at 1-1. With less than 10 minutes to go in the first half, Maryville took back the lead when they connected on a cross and their shot got past the UIndy defense to make it 2-1 in favor of the Saints.
Like the first half, UIndy controlled the ball for a good portion of the first 10 minutes of the half. Steinwascher had a good look at his second goal of the game, but, was unable to get it past the Saints defense. The Saints took the ball into UIndy territory and drew a foul on their shot attempt to earn the PK. Maryville made most of their PK opportunity, getting the shot past
Miles Palmer in goal, giving the Saints the 2-1 cushion with over 30 minutes left to play. The game got physical late as the Hounds were looking to extend the game. Maryville was down a player after one of theirs received a red card, UIndy knew they had to take advantage. In the 79th minute, they used the 11-10 advantage they best they could.
Ben Rohder took the cross from
Alejandro Steinwascher and headed it in to pull the Greyhounds within just one. The Hounds were unable to muster another goal in the final minutes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

-It is the first time this season UIndy has allowed three or more goals this season, the first time they have since October 2017 against Rockhurst
-

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on his team's performance, "very good road performance from us today. I felt like we dominated in all areas other than the scoreboard. Some poor 1-on-1 defending hurt us in the end, but I really like how we are developing as a team. This was our most complete performance so far on the ball. If we perform like this moving forward, we are in for an exciting end to the season."
