CINCINNATI – A day after competing against IUPUI, the Greyhounds jumped on the bus to Cincinnati to face off against another Division I opponent: the Bearcats. On Friday, the Greyhounds provided a good contest with some fast races, despite a loss for both the men and the women. The women lost on a final score of 245-55, while the men lost the battle 166.33 - 133.66.
Of the several surprises that came tonight, diver Ben Radar had a meet to remember. The Greenfield, Ind., native collected his first collegiate win on the three-meter board with a 321.5-point performance, good for a qualifying standard for the NCAA prequalification meet in the spring. Radar also placed second on the one-meter, scoring 275.85 points overall in the event.
Payton Staman also qualified for the prequal meet on both boards, looking to set up a third-consecutive All-American year.
Sophomore
Cassie Kury continued her solid start to her sophomore campaign, finishing in second place on both the one- and three-meter boards against the Bearcats. On the three-meter, Kury dove for 250.05 points, besting her season-best by about 18 points. On the three-meter, she obtained another season best with 245.55 points (about a 12 point improvement).
In a moment that nobody could predict, both teams witnessed a three-way tie for first place in the 100 butterfly.
Brady Stabler,
Ante Lucev, and a Cincinnati male swimmer all touched the wall for first place with a time of :50.67. Other swim meets to experience this in the last three years included the 2018 Pac-12 Championships and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Adam Rosipal followed up Thursday night's performance with another set of fast swims Friday, starting with a 9:25.12 in the 1000 free. Not only did Rosipal drop seven seconds from the last night, but he also obtained a B-cut in the event. Later he excelled again in the 500 free, obtaining another B-cut on a time of 4:33.36.
Sophomore
Izzi Clark led the way for the Greyhound women, securing a second-place finish in the 100 back. The time of 57.64 seconds was less than a second from the B-cut, something to look forward to achieving later this season.
Another backstroker who swam well for the Greyhounds was UIndy's Male Student-Athlete of the Year last year,
Rodrigo Codo Berti. His performance in the 200 backstroke was stellar, touching with aa 1:49.1 to receive a B-cut in the event. Berti also secured another victory in the 100 backstroke, hitting a solid 50.00 for the day.
The last several races were also bright spots for the Greyhounds, including a second-place finish by
Antonio Milin in the 200 IM. The freshman from Zadar, Croatia dropped more than two seconds in the event from Thursday night's performance.
In the final race, the team of
Victor Antonon,
Ante Lucev,
Anthony Williamson and
Guilherme Zavaneli finished the meet with a win, touching first in the men's 400 free relay on a time of 3:04.23. Zavaneli was also victorious in the 200 free, where he splashed a 1:37.96 B-cut – one and a half seconds faster than Thursday.
"We got out of it exactly what we wanted," explained head coach
Jason Hite. "Tough racing, exciting relay battles and tough competition. A little bit of a rough meet for our women; back-to-back meets are tough. We still have a lot of work to do, but we're happy with what we saw today.
The Greyhounds will look to continue their early season success with a big test over UIndy's Fall Break. On October 13 and 14, the divers will stay in Indianapolis to compete in the UIndy Diving Invitational at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. Meanwhile, the Greyhound swimmers will travel out to Charlotte, N.C., where they will compete in a tri-meet against Wingate and Queens, the defending men's and women's national champions.
