Lakes, Greyhounds romp Elmhurst with hot shooting

INDIANAPOLIS – Trevor Lakes and the UIndy men's basketball team (3-0) shot their way past the visiting Elmhurst Bluejays on Wednesday evening in the Hounds' home opener, 91-60.
 
Lakes poured in a career-high 27 points, including five from deep, while newcomer Radwan Bakkali contributed 15 tallies off the bench.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds opened the game on a 12-0 run, holding the Bluejays scoreless for the first 3:20. Lakes hit a pair of trey-balls during the stretch, with CJ Hardaway filling up his line early.
 
Miles Wayer saw 17 minutes of action against Elmhurst, knocking down two three-pointers in the first half to grow the Greyhound lead.
 
After making just 65 percent from the free-throw line in the first couple games, the Hounds sunk 21 of 25 on Wednesday for an 84 percent clip from the stripe. Lakes led UIndy from the line, going eight for eight, while Bakkali and Hardaway were also perfect in four attempts. The Greyhounds limited the Bluejays to just eighth free throws in the win.
 
Jimmy King paced the Greyhound offense on Wednesday, dishing out a game-high seven helpers. Overall, UIndy assisted on 20-of-29 field goals, its highest percentage since January 13 against Lewis.
 
Bakkali led the Hounds in the second half with 13 points as the team grew its lead to 31 on two occasions.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Wednesday marked the second time in Lakes' career the Lebanon, Ind. native has reached 20 or more points. The sophomore's 27 against the Bluejays is the highest total in his career thus far as a Greyhounds, and his most since the win over Bluefield State last December.
 
After being held scoreless in just five minutes of action through the team's first two games this season, Bakkali tallied 15 points in 16 minutes of action against Elmhurst. The senior transfer grabbed two offensive boards in the win, which he promptly turned both into points.
 
Freshman Jacob Polakovich pulled down another six rebounds on Wednesday, giving him 16 boards in 31 minutes this season. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native also scored four points in the win.
 
Jesse Kempson recorded seven of the team's 39 rebounds against Elmhurst and is now averaging 7.3 per game through three contests.
 
UP NEXT
UIndy will travel back to Michigan on Sunday for an in-region battle with Grand Valley State. The last meeting between the Greyhounds and Lakers was November 29, 2008, with Grand Valley leading the all-time series, 5-2.
