Hounds overcome first-half deficit to down Lakers, 88-80

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The UIndy men's basketball team (4-0) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit on Sunday afternoon to down the Grand Valley State Lakers (3-1), 88-80.

The Greyhounds trailed by 18 at one point in the first half before shooting nearly 60 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After allowing the Lakers to shoot 58.3 percent from deep in the first half, the Hounds held them scoreless from beyond the arc in the second. Jimmy King scored 13 points in the second half, including the first five tallies after the break.

A pair of free throws from Radwan Bakkali capped a 16-7 run to knot the game at 65 apiece with under 10 minutes left. Hometown rookie Jacob Polakovich drilled two from the charity stripe to give the Greyhounds a 70-69 lead, one the Crimson and Grey would not surrender en route to the 88-80 victory.

Jesse Kempson posted his first double-double of the season 13 points and 13 boards, while King recorded a game-high 22 points in the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Greyhounds' 4-0 start is the best to begin a season since 2014-15 when UIndy began 17-0 and ascended to No. 1 in the country.

King's 22 points marks the third time this season the junior has totaled at least 20 in the scoring column. After six more dimes on Sunday, the Indianapolis native is averaging 7.0 assists per contest.

UIndy shot 12-of-29 from deep against the Lakers, the second game in a row that the team has drilled double-digit three-pointers. The Hounds are shooting 38.8 percent from three-point range this season.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Stan Gouard: "I didn't think we were ready to play out of the gate. We got cold and they stayed hot in the first half, but I wanted to stay aggressive.

"I don't think a broken nose is going to keep Jimmy out. He made the decision to play and thank God that he did with 22 points and six assists.

"Tye accepted that challenge on the defensive end. He told the guys that he wanted Hunter Hale and he held him to two points in the second half."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will host a pair of Thanksgiving game this coming week. Lake Superior State will travel to the Circle City for a 3:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday before welcoming Wilberforce on Friday afternoon.
