Thomas, Alsot propel Hounds to win over Lake State

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team played their third home game in five days Wednesday afternoon when they hosted Lake Superior State for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Hounds at 2-2 had a tough test with the visiting Lakers coming to town in the midst of a three-game winning streak. UIndy was able to end the Lakers three-game streak, topping Lake Superior State 68-59.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game got off to a sluggish start for both teams as it took almost three minutes of play before the game's first points were scored. Once both teams got into a rhythm it was tough for either to stop the other. Laura Thomas was the ignitor of the UIndy offense, leading the Greyhounds with eight points in the first frame. Freshman Liz Alsot saw extended minutes in the first quarter with foul trouble plaguing the Hounds, scoring four points early on. After UIndy did get the offense rolling, the Hounds shot over 53% from the field while sinking both of their shots from the charity stripe to lead the Lakers by two at the end of the first.

Thomas continued her strong play in the second quarter, but the Lakers came out right away and went to work on the Hounds. Lake State came out hit a three to open the quarter to take the lead, battled with UIndy before eventually taking a six-point lead over the Hounds. After the media timeout the Hounds took over the game with Thomas and Alsot helping lead the charge. UIndy got aggressive in the quarter, going to the line eight time in the quarter, making six of their attempts. The Hounds grew their lead and hit the locker room at halftime with a three-point advantage on the scoreboard.

The Hounds got out to a hot start in the third quarter, jumping out to a six-point lead. Lake State got on a roll and fought back to tie the game halfway through the quarter and eventually took a two-point lead. Thomas hit a three to put UIndy back on top and the Hounds would hold on to it for a while. Lake State came back to tie it, but Thomas hit a pair of free throws with less than 30 seconds left to put the Hounds back on top heading into the fourth quarter. UIndy kept up the aggression in the third quarter, getting the line nine times, only missing two of their attempts.

The final quarter brought plenty of excitement to Nicoson Hall. Lake State tied the game at fifty with over six minutes to go in the quarter, Alsot got to the line and hit both free throws to put the Hounds up and then Mickey Sasson made a layup to give the Hounds a four-point advantage. The media timeout gave both teams to rest, UIndy took advantage of the brief break and pushed their lead up to six until a Lake State took a timeout with just under two minutes to go to try and slow down the Hounds attack. Lake State tried to press the Hounds, but the Hounds beat it with ease, finding Alsot down the court wide open for a layup while taking contact from a Laker defender and pushing the UIndy lead to seven with just under a minute left. The Lakers started fouling the Greyhounds, just fouling the players that were good from the line. Thomas scored five points in the game's final minute to seal the victory for the Hounds.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Liz Alsot came off the bench and scored a career-high 20 points, shooting an efficient six-of-eight from the field and eight-of-nine from the foul line. Alsot joins Taylor Dillard as the only freshmen this season to come off the bench and put up double-digit points.
-The Hounds held the Lakers to 16.7% from three-point range, the lowest of any opponent this season. The last team UIndy held under 20% from beyond the arc was Bellarmine last year when the Knights shot 18.8% from deep.
-UIndy outrebounded their opponent for the fifth-straight game Wednesday afternoon, the five-game streak is the most since February 2017-March 2017 when UIndy outrebounded their opponents in seven-straight games.

UP NEXT
The Hounds get a brief break for Thanksgiving and then come back to campus for a Sunday afternoon game against Tiffin at 2 p.m. in Nicoson Hall.
