INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 15 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds' men's lacrosse team had a rough outing against the visiting No. 9 Seton Hill Griffins on Saturday, losing 18-5 at home in their season opener and setting a school record for most goals conceded.
The Griffins roared out of the gate, scoring three goals on the game's first three possessions en route to a 6-0 lead in the first.
Parker Johnson's man-up goal stopped the run, but the Griffins tacked on another before the quarter ended to lead 7-1.
The Griffins scored three more to open the second, but back-to-back goals by
Matthew Johnson and
Matt Schoeneck trimmed the deficit before another Griffins goal made it 11-3 at halftime.
Tyler Johnston and
Scott LaPoe scored in the third for the Hounds to trim the lead to 12-5, but six unanswered Griffins goals in the fourth ended any hope of a comeback and gave the Griffins an 18-5 win.
Matthew Johnson led the Hounds on offense, putting four of his nine shots on target and dishing out an assist as well as scoring a goal.
Max Gerhardt won five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
The Griffins won 16 faceoffs to the Greyhounds' 10. The Griffins outshot the Hounds 38-30 and the Hounds' goalkeepers combined for five saves. The Hounds had the extra man four times, but only scored once with the advantage.
The Hounds will take the field again in two weeks on the road against the No. 13 Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
